AGRI NEWS NET "LIVE" FEED
The next generation of global billionaires is likely to emerge from agriculture, food systems, and related sectors rather than traditional oil empires. As food becomes one of the world’s most strategic resources due to population growth, climate change, and geopolitical tensions, control over food production is increasingly seen as key to future power and wealth.Africa sits at the heart of this shift.
Global food prices fell by 1.2% in October as weaker import demand pushed down cereals, dairy and meat. A monthly index of globally traded food commodities averaged 133.9 points, down from September, but still 5.9% higher than a year earlier and 16.4% below its March 2022 peak. Higher sugar and vegetable oil prices partly offset the declines.
South Africa’s Department of Agriculture has spent R341 million to build a vaccine production facility at Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP), which is still not complete 13 years after it was announced. The project is nearly a decade behind schedule and has left South Africa unable to modernise its vaccine manufacturing capabilities.
