As of late September 2026South AfricaSouth Africa continues to face its most severe FMD outbreak in decades. The country lost its FMD-free status in 2019 and declared a national disaster in February 2026 after widespread spread of mainly SAT1 and SAT2 serotypes.Current situation (September 2026):
- Outbreaks remain active across most provinces, with thousands of reported cases (earlier mid-year figures showed over 2,000–2,400 active outbreaks).
- Significant progress has been made in resolving some outbreaks through vaccination and stricter controls (hundreds of outbreaks closed in mid-2026), but the disease is still widespread.
- Massive vaccination campaign underway: Over 20 million vaccine doses have been imported or produced this year (mainly from Turkey’s Dollvet and Argentina’s Biogénesis Bagó, plus some from Botswana Vaccine Institute and local production).
- Target: Vaccinate approximately 80% of the national cattle herd. Dairy cattle have largely been covered; progress varies by province.
- Movement controls, quarantine, and biosecurity measures remain in force in affected areas.
- Local vaccine production is being scaled up, and private companies are being invited to manufacture vaccines to meet long-term demand.
- Recovery of FMD-free status is expected to take several years.
- FMD confirmed on a commercial farm in the Karasburg area (//Kharas Region) — inside Namibia’s WOAH-recognised FMD-free zone (south of the veterinary cordon fence).
- 10 out of 11 samples from clinically affected cattle tested positive.
- This is the first confirmed outbreak in Namibia’s commercial FMD-free zone in decades (since the 1960s in some reports).
- Suspension of all movement, marketing, trade and slaughter of cloven-hoofed animals (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, game).
- Suspension of imports, exports and in-transit movements of cloven-hoofed animals and their raw products.
- Meatco has suspended beef exports.
- Intensive surveillance and roadblocks activated.
- Active surveillance and movement restrictions along borders (especially with South Africa and Zimbabwe).
- Precautionary measures in border areas and feedlots.
- Thousands of cattle have been stranded in private feedlots due to movement and slaughter restrictions.
- Government has allocated significant funding (including P97 million earlier) for FMD response and is promoting shared responsibility with the private sector.
- Botswana continues to protect its FMD-free zones and export status through strict controls.

Dit het so lekker gereën en my groenvoer wat ek aangeplant het, is besig om mooi op te kom.My ou boerboel, Bles, is verlede jaar dood en ek het nou weer 'n nuwe een gekry. Ek moes amper 'n hele LM-sleepwa se mieliegeld uithaal vir die een, wat 'n groot meneer gaan word.
Die Springbokke speel later vandag teen Australië, net so na kerk - as ek dit reg het. En ek is so bly dat ons 'n ware man as kaptein het. Dis nou yster, 'n voorbeeld van hoe 'n rugbyspeler moet lyk en hom moet gedra. Ek hou regtig duimvas - gelukkig is ek nie rugby mal nie- die manne word goed betaal. Dis vol sondag want later is dit F1.
Die Suid Afrikaanse rugby spanne wat teen die Noorde gespeel het goed gedoen- alles gewen,maar ek moet se daar is paar jong manne in die Swart truie se span wat lekker 'arrogant; is.

Namibië is 'n voorbeeld vir baie lande, omdat hulle so vinnig opgetree het toe bek-en-klouseer hulle vandeesweek getref het. Hier by ons het hulle vir jare gesloer voor iets drasties gebeur het- voor ons nuwe Minister die leisels oorgeneem het.
