This AGRI NEWS RUSH -Some of the news stories of this week-, SUNDAY EDITIONALWAYS ON TIME  -

News Comments  - Internationally shared - Nothing Sensational.  News platform of the real commercial farmers of South Africa .

Just that " ONE" step ahead-  Always on time- 7 days of the week - 365 days of the year- This commitment.

By the end of September 2024, much of the imported wheat also helped to stabilize the stocks and even boosted the opening stocks for the new season. At the start of the 2024-25 wheat season, the opening stock was 753k tonnes, up 34% from the previous season. These relatively large opening stocks boost the 2024-25 season supply. the 2024-25 season imports will likely account for 47% of South Africa's annual wheat consumption. The sourcing of imports should not be a challenge. There are sizeable global wheat supplies. The International Grains Council forecasts the 2024-25 global wheat production at 798 million tonnes, the second largest on record.

Momentum seems to be growing for reopening an international trade in rhino horn, congruent with what seems an insatiable desire to monetise our remaining biodiversity. This is exemplified by a letter published in one of the world’s foremost academic journals, Science, on October 10 titled “Protect white rhinos by legalising horn trade”.

Global food inflation rallied to the highest level since October 2022 at 5.6% y/y on the back of gains across all commodities except for meat. However, the monthly trend showed a slowdown of 0.6ppt from September at 2% m/m in October 2024.

It is offshore mango season in North America and Europe, which means the majority of supply is coming from South America currently. The big question is how much volume will come from Peru this season after an early and strong start with Kent mangoes. Brazil had a rough start with exports to the U.S. with port strikes, inconsistencies in deliveries and limited space on vessels.

The average banana price increased by another 2% to R14.23 per kilogram or R256 per 18kg box and is now 14% higher than a year ago. We still expect prices to remain on a relatively higher level until the end of the year due to supply that can remain under pressure.

In major maize production regions of South Africa, the optimal planting date for maize is considered to be around late October to mid-December for Mpumalanga (22%), the Free State (43%) and North West (17%), respectively. In these regions maize production is predominantly dry-land, which makes planting date highly dependent on the onset of the rainy season.
