Increase Focus on natural sources of folate, such as leafy greens (spinach, kale), legumes (beans, lentils), nuts, and fruits (avocado, citrus fruits). Limit Processed Foods: These often contain folic acid, a synthetic form of folate, which may not be effectively utilized by people with MTHFR mutations.
Increase Protein Intake: Higher protein intake supports methylation, a critical biochemical process that can be inefficient in those with MTHFR mutations.
Fatty Acids: To support heart health, especially important given the increased risk of cardiovascular issues associated with MTHFR mutations.
Exercise Regularly: Helps to manage weight, reduce stress, and improve cardiovascular health.
Sleep 7+ Hours: Important for overall health and helps to regulate bodily processes affected by MTHFR mutations.
Autophagy is a cellular recycling system that delivers dysfunctional organelles and intracellular components to the lysosome for degradation and recycling. The lysosome contains digestive enzymes that break down the contents of the autophagosome, releasing molecules back into the cytosol for reuse.
Autophagy helps cells function properly by removing junk components that can slow or prevent a cell from working. It also helps destroy bacteria and viruses that cause infection.
Autophagy occurs naturally in cells all the time, but it's more active when cells are under stress or starvation. Reducing calories and fasting can prompt cells to increase autophagy.
A key sign of autophagy is reduced appetite, which may be due to changes in hormone levels.
Autophagy is linked to many human diseases, including cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Autophagy may protect cancer cells by providing extra nutrients or by keeping anticancer drugs from destroying them.
Autophagy will also eliminate microbes and viruses.
Proteins can be misfolded, oxidized, mutated, or glycated. As an example, when it is misfolded, after it’s initially formed in your DNA, it no longer works and can accumulate in your body, leading to amyloid plaques. The plaquing can lead to type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s. (By the way, you also need zinc to help with the cleanup process.) Glycated proteins result from consuming a combination of protein and sugar, such as you’d find in barbequed ribs. This can lead to something called advanced glycation end products; check below the video for links to some of my other videos about this.
Autophagy isn’t really an on/off process. Your body is designed to always be in autophagy; but, if you have high levels of sugar in your body or a severe inflammatory condition, it’s probably not happening. Most people do have some going on, and especially if you’re doing keto, exercise, and definitely if you’re intermittent fasting. You can create enormously beneficial effects for your health, the more fasting you do. Though you’re probably always in autophagy, by the time you get to 18 hours of fasting you’re in a serious degree of it. However, there’s a certain point where autophagy plateaus. Some studies say 24 hours; others say a little bit more or less. We still have much to learn. And each part of your body has its own autophagy. One, for instance, is specific to the mitochondria that are the powerhouse of your cells. Or others are specific to your bones, or lungs. If I were you, I’d focus on doing keto, exercise, and intermittent fasting to spur your autophagy to its highest possible degree, for the most health benefits..
It might take a little time to break the habit of snacking, but once you do, you’ll realize how much better you and your gut feel when you’re not feeding yourself every hour or two. And imagine the extra time you’ll have in your day when you’re not spending so much of it eating! Incorporate foods rich in sulfur (e.g., garlic, onions, cruciferous vegetables) to boost glutathione production.
