A Damaged Earth: How Are We Going to Fix Land Degradation and Drought?

But the biggest question is not whether we understand the problem. We do.

The real question is: How are we going to fix it in a world that often does not seem to care enough about the Earth?

We speak about climate change, drought, desertification, declining soil health, disappearing biodiversity, water shortages and rising temperatures. Governments hold conferences. Scientists produce reports. Environmental organisations issue warnings. Farmers see the changes directly in their fields and on the veld.

Yet, despite all the warnings, much of the world continues consuming as if natural resources are unlimited.

The Earth, however, does not work that way.

We cannot keep taking without giving back
Land is not simply a piece of ground on which we grow food. Healthy soil is a living system. It contains microorganisms, organic matter, minerals, fungi, insects and countless biological processes that make agriculture and natural ecosystems possible.

When soil is continuously disturbed, overgrazed, eroded, compacted or stripped of organic matter, its ability to hold water and support life declines.

Once that happens, drought becomes even more destructive.

Rain that should infiltrate healthy soil can run off hard, degraded ground. Water disappears instead of being stored where plants need it. Rivers and dams receive sudden runoff, while the soil remains dry.

This creates a vicious cycle: degraded land holds less water, and drought further damages the land.

Farmers cannot solve the problem alone
Farmers are often expected to carry much of the responsibility for protecting land, but agriculture is only one part of a much bigger global system.

Consumers, governments, industries, mining operations, municipalities, financial institutions and ordinary households all influence how natural resources are used.

We cannot demand cheap food, unlimited consumption and endless economic growth while expecting nature to absorb the consequences indefinitely.

At some point, society must decide what is more important: short-term profit or long-term survival.

The answer begins with the soil
Restoring degraded land is possible, but it requires patience.

We need to rebuild soil organic matter, improve water infiltration, protect ground cover, reduce unnecessary soil disturbance, manage grazing carefully and restore vegetation where it has disappeared.

Farmers can play a major role through regenerative and conservation-based practices. Good grazing management can allow grasslands to recover. Keeping soil covered protects it from heat, wind and erosion. Better water management can help rainfall remain on the farm instead of rapidly running away.

Trees, natural vegetation, wetlands and healthy grasslands also form part of the solution because they help protect biodiversity and water systems.

But restoration cannot happen overnight.

We must change our attitude
Perhaps the greatest challenge is not technological. It is human.

We have become accustomed to believing that someone else will solve the problem.

We expect governments to act, scientists to develop new solutions and farmers to produce more food with fewer resources. Meanwhile, many of us continue wasting water, wasting food and consuming products without asking where the raw materials came from or what happened to the land that produced them.

We need a different mindset.

The Earth is not something we own. We are temporary users of a system that must also support the generations that come after us.

There is still hope
The situation is serious, but it is not hopeless.

Every hectare of restored land matters. Every farmer who improves soil health matters. Every community that protects its water matters. Every person who wastes less, consumes more responsibly and understands where food comes from becomes part of the solution.

We cannot repair the entire planet overnight.

But we can start with the land beneath our feet.

The future will not be determined only by international agreements or political speeches. It will also be determined by millions of everyday decisions about soil, water, food, farming, consumption and how we treat nature.

If we continue treating the Earth as an unlimited resource, degradation will continue.

If we begin treating it as a living system that must be maintained, restored and respected, there is still a future worth protecting.

The question is no longer whether the Earth can survive our behaviour. The question is whether we are prepared to change our behaviour so that the Earth — and humanity with it — can thrive.
