A new maize disease, Goss bacterial wilt and leaf blight, has hit the South African maize industry after it landed here from America. It has the potential to cause extensive in a maize field under ideal conditions, and it could potentially have an effect on exports. In an international notification on Monday 14 January the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) officially confirmed that the disease, Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. nebraskensis (Goss’ wilt), is already present in four provinces in South Africa. . It was already observed in places last season, but due to its phytosanitary implications on the maize industry, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DALRRD) (now the Department of Agriculture) first thoroughly investigated and positively identified it before it was officially announced.
The African Union (AU), has adopted a new agricultural development strategy that will see the continent increase its agrifood output by 45 per cent by 2035 and transform its agri-food systems as part of its new plan to become food secure in a decade. This is after the African Union Extraordinary Summit on the Post-Malabo Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) held in Kampala, Uganda, adopted the 10-year CAADP Strategy and Action Plan, and the Kampala CAADP Declaration on Building Resilient and Sustainable Agrifood Systems in Africa, which will be implemented from 2026 to 2035. In the Kampala declaration, the 55 AU member states set forth six commitments that should transform and strengthen the agri-food system on the continent.

La Niña is one phase of the climate pattern called the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which forms in the tropical Pacific. La Niña is the “cool” phase of ENSO, since the waters in this part of the Pacific are cooler than average. El Niño is the “warm” phase of ENSO, as the waters in the tropical Pacific are warmer than average. While the focus is typically on El Niño and La Niña, there is also a neutral phase. The neutral phase of ENSO basically means everything in this part of the Pacific Ocean is at or near their averages. READ MORE

Die regering wil ’n fonds van R100 miljard op die been bring om eksklusief swart sakeondernemings by te staan . .
South Africa introduced a national minimum wage (NMW) in 2019 – however, as the figure has risen, so has outright non-compliance and the use of tactics like cutting work hours to get around the laws. This is according to a study conducted for the NMW Commission by academics from the University of Cape Town.

No one wants to hear about higher prices in January, when there is so much stress on people returning to work and sending kids to school, but we can expect South African coffee prices to increase soon. Brazil and Vietnam are major producers of coffee beans. We import from both and both have had bad weather — drought and heavy rains in the case of Vietnam — which have affected production.
The ban has been in place since foot-and-mouth disease broke out in Limpopo in January 2019.In a notice to livestock industry stakeholders, the chief director of Zimbabwe’s directorate of veterinary services, Dr PV Makaya, wrote that cloven-hoofed animals and their products may be imported to Zimbabwe again from Gauteng, North West, the Northern Cape and Western Cape.
The cattle market is booming, reminiscent of the 1970s' inflationary market, but low inventories, rising prices, and carcass sizes don't align with comfortable cycles, suggesting underlying variables. Larger carcasses—up 175 pounds since 2000—require 20% more days on feed and greater corn consumption. Who is driving carcass size? It doesn't feel like producers.

As Peru's blueberry harvest volumes reached normal levels again with increased exports, the global blueberry market has returned to normal. Growers in China are seeing ideal weather that enhances the flavour of blueberries this year. South Africa's season, which is coming to an end soon, has seen blueberry exports increase by 7%. Debunking the cow methane myth:
— James Melville 🚜 (@JamesMelville) January 17, 2025
After 10 years, cow methane is broken down into CO2, entering a biogenic carbon cycle absorbed by plants via photosynthesis, carbon sequestration in the soil, converted into cellulose, eaten by cows and the cycle repeats. True sustainability. pic.twitter.com/pCCBWcfnDc
