South Africa aims to deepen intra-BRICS agricultural trade, as current exports to BRICS countries constitute less than 10% of its $413.7 billion global agricultural exports in 2024. Despite the BRICS group not being a formal trade bloc, high import tariffs and non-tariff barriers, such as phytosanitary restrictions, limit trade within the group. The BRICS countries import over $300 billion in agricultural products annually, with China and India as major markets for commodities like soybeans, beef, maize, and wine, many of which South Africa produces at scale.

South Africa has reported two new outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 on poultry farms in North West and Mpumalanga provinces, adding strain to an already challenged poultry sector dealing with shortages from Daybreak Farms and delayed imports from Brazil. Astral Foods has launched a R35m vaccination campaign targeting the H5 strain, covering 200,000 broiler breeders (5% of its flock), but the vaccine does not protect against the H7 strain, which caused a devastating 2023 outbreak. A local H7 vaccine is still in registration

South Africa’s agricultural sector is showing promising signs despite ongoing challenges. While cattle farming and the poultry industry grapple with animal diseases, horticulture and field crop production are experiencing a robust 2024-25 season, driven by improved yields and favorable weather conditions.

South Africa’s 2025 citrus season is set for a 3.6% export volume increase, targeting 171 million cartons, driven by oranges, grapefruit, and late mandarins like Nadorcott. Capespan, a key player with farms across regions like Limpopo and the Cape, benefits from a March–October harvest and offers a diverse portfolio including oranges (Navel, Valencia), easy-peelers (Clementine, Nadorcott), ,,,

In the build-up to the Agriculture Budget Vote Debate this coming Tuesday, the Citrus Growers' Association of Southern Africa (CGA) has outlined key priorities that will help the citrus industry grow and export a total of 260 million 15kg cartons in 2032. These priorities are improved market access, ever-vigilant biosecurity and improved logistics.

’n Vierde entstof teen knopvelsiekte, Bovipox (Reg.no.

South Africa’s red meat industry is facing severe operational and financial difficulties due to ongoing Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks, which have led to trade suspensions by key partners like Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, and China, affecting meat and animal product exports.

Suez Canal activity experienced a less steep drop in traffic in the third quarter of fiscal 2024–25 than in last year's third quarter. According to a statement issued by Egypt's Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, Suez Canal activity dropped by 23.1% year over year in the third quarter of the fiscal year, compared to a plunge of 51.6% in Q3 FY2023–24.

China is a significant market, accounting for roughly 11% of global agricultural imports, which totalled US$218 billion in 2023. However, accessing China is not as easy, despite the country’s optimistic statements about lowering import tariffs for goods from various African countries. Until there is clarity about this process and timelines, we continue to face higher tariffs in China and some phytosanitary barriers.

A group of South African citrus growers have joined forces to boost demand for grapefruit in Europe, launching a collaborative marketing campaign under the new SummerStar Ruby Grapefruit brand.

The Israel-Iran ceasefire led to a sharp decline in urea prices, with Middle East prices dropping $25 to the $450s/t, though still above the anticipated $420-430/t for India’s 7 July tender seeking 2 million tons. Brazil’s urea prices are below $450/t CFR, relying on sanctioned Russian and Iranian supplies and Chinese product. Egyptian producers maintain $470/t FOB, focusing on inventory rebuilding, while Iran offers urea at $410/t FOB. Ethiopia’s 200,000t urea tender may divert volumes from India. Ammonium sulphate fell $5/t, and ammonium nitrates remained stable due to sold-out European producers. Ammonia prices rose.
