The South African poultry industry is seeking urgent clarification from Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Ebrahim Tau regarding a vague statement made on July 29, 2025, about a U.S. trade deal, which referenced “simplifying” U.S. poultry exports under the 2016 tariff rate quota to unlock $91 million in trade. The industry, concerned about the lack of consultation, notes that no formal discussions occurred despite a May 16, 2025, meeting where it requested stakeholder engagement and the revocation of the U.S. poultry import quota (increased from 65,000 to 72,000 tonnes), which allows tariff-free imports despite anti-dumping concerns.

The South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB) interest rate decision on July 31, 2025, is met with cautious optimism in the agricultural sector due to the looming 30% U.S. tariff on South African exports, effective August 7, 2025, and ongoing biosecurity challenges like foot and mouth disease (FMD). Despite a positive agricultural outlook, these issues dampen sector confidence. The recent rate cut to 7% (from 7.5%) reduces debt servicing costs, providing relief after the 2024 drought-induced contraction, which eroded profit margins amid a 67% rise in agricultural debt over the past decade (5.8% CAGR).

Under the collaborative project among University of the Witwatersrand, nuclear energy officials and conservationists, five rhinos were injected Thursday in what the university hopes will be the mass injection of the declining rhino population. Last year, about 20 rhinos at a sanctuary were injected with isotopes as part of initial trials that paved the way for Thursday's launch. The radioactive isotopes even at low levels can be recognized by radiation detectors at airports and borders, which can lead to the arrest of poachers and traffickers. READ MORE

Trusts have long been a cornerstone of estate planning — and for good reason. When properly structured, a trust can safeguard wealth, reduce risk, and support generational continuity. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: not all trusts are created equal. In fact, most aren't even valid. READ MORE

In South Africa, most of the arable land was taken from African people by colonial settlers. Ever since apartheid ended in 1994, people who were dispossessed of their land have been trying to get it back. When land is given back to an entire community, things can become complicated. For example, some people might want to divide it up into individual plots; others might want to use the land communally. Or individuals in positions of power might exploit their influence to secure personal gains. READ MORE

Trade Minister Parks Tau was expected to address the issue alongside a Transformation Fund statement, but negotiations remain unresolved.

Andrew Prince from F Curve Agri reports that a new Indian urea tender, closing August 4, 2025, seeking 2 million tons for shipment by September 22, is expected to drive global urea prices upward. Despite recent declines from $500/t to $480/t (Middle East FOB), prices have risen to $490/t FOB due to India’s urgent demand, with inventories 40% lower year-on-year. Brazilian urea prices increased from $450/t to $470/t CFR, though trading is limited. China may increase its urea export allocation to 3.5 million tons but is unlikely to supply India due to U.S.-China tariff tensions. Iranian urea trades at $425/t FOB, $50/t below the Middle East benchmark, due to low demand for sanctioned product.
