World Soil Day 2025 (5 December) focuses on “Soil & Water: A Source of Life,” emphasising that these two resources function as one system essential for food security and climate resilience. In South Africa, both are under strain: Water scarcity is worsening due to erratic rainfall, over-extraction and pollution. Soils are deteriorating through erosion, compaction, nutrient loss, salinisation and declining organic matter.

Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen has rejected the dairy industry body Sampro’s request for continued statutory measures, citing inadequate industry support. With the current levy expiring on 31 December 2025, the dairy sector will enter 2026 without formal backing.

South Africa is preparing for major amendments to the National Water Act (1998). The revised bill—published in 2023, approved by Cabinet in August 2025, and tabled in Parliament in October—is expected to come into effect in early 2026 or 2027, likely in phases.

In the US, Senator John Kennedy has introduced the AGOA Extension and Bilateral Engagement Act (AGOA 2.0), proposing a two-year renewal of AGOA but excluding South Africa due to concerns about its ties with China and Russia.

South Africa’s agricultural machinery market has grown strongly throughout 2025, boosted by excellent 2024–25 harvests, favourable La Niña weather and lower interest rates. Tractor sales highlight farmer confidence as summer grain and oilseed plantings are set to rise 1% to 4.1 million hectares. The jump in the Agbiz/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index to 67 signals a major recovery in sector sentiment. Good harvests, improved port performance, early summer rains and the government’s commitment to vaccinate the entire cattle herd against foot-and-mouth disease have reinforced this optimism.

The family farming network Saai has launched the H2A Agency Association of South Africa (H2AAA), a self-regulating body for agencies assisting South Africans seeking seasonal farm work in the US under the H-2A visa programme. Around 25 000 South Africans participated in 2024/25, valued for their strong work ethic and skills. The new association aims to protect workers from exploitative “fly-by-night” agents and reduce challenges such as workers switching farms after arrival.

In most parts of the world, farmers are getting old, in their high 50’s. In many countries, the current generation of farmers is expected to retire within a decade. A number that is often mentioned is that about 50% of farmers will reach retirement age in 10 years from now, in 2035. Here in Canada, I have even read the number of 40% within 5 years. READ MORE
NEWS  COMMENTARY-
The jump in the Agbiz/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index to 67 is the clearest signal yet that South Africa’s agricultural sector has turned the corner. After two quarters of sliding sentiment, the mood has flipped dramatically in the final stretch of 2025, and for good reason.Bumper harvests in grains, oilseeds and horticulture filled order books and bank accounts. Ports, for once, worked instead of choking. La Niña is delivering the early summer rains everyone prayed for. And, perhaps most importantly, the government finally committed to vaccinating the entire national cattle herd against foot-and-mouth disease – a move that could unlock billions in lost export revenue and restore confidence in the livestock industry. The hard data backs the optimism: tractor sales up 10 %, combine harvesters up 8 %, employment ticking higher, and exports still-strong exports even with stubbornly high input costs. Farmers are voting with their wallets, and they are betting on another solid season. Wandile Sihlobo’s closing remark nails it: rapid vaccination, decent rains through at least March, better-run municipalities, less rural crime, and the sensible release of state land to properly vetted beneficiaries could turn 2025’s recovery into a multi-year growth story. For the first time in a long while, the numbers, the weather and the policy signals are all pointing the same way. If government keeps its foot on the accelerator instead of the brake, 2026 could be the year South African agriculture has been waiting for.

Die uitbreking is verlede week in twee wildevarke opgespoor en nog sewe wildevarke in dieselfde gebied het sedertdien gevolg van die siekte gevrek..
