South Africa has one of the largest economies on the African continent. Being one of the most technologically advanced and diversified economies in the whole country, South Africa’s GDP nearly tripled between 1996 and 2011, reaching its $416 billion peak. As of 2022, it stands at over $435 billion, with the purchasing power parity at $1.250 trillion, a constant increase from the previous years. Around the early 2010s, foreign reserves increased from $3 billion to nearly $50 billion, creating a strong economy and a sizable middle class. These changes appeared within two decades of the end of the apartheid, the institutionalized racial segregation that lasted from 1948 to the early 1990s. The total market capitalization of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange stands at $1.28 trillion as of late 2021, and while natural resource extraction remains one of the most significant contributors to the economy, the tertiary sector has been under continuous expansion since the end of the apartheid. As of 2014, the service sector employed nearly 72% of the labor force, while 23.5% worked in industry and 4.6% in agriculture. South Africa is the world’s largest producer of chrome, platinum, vanadium, vermiculite and manganese and the second-largest producer of palladium, zirconium and rutile.
Die ander finaliste was mnre. JP Meintjes van Viljoenskroon in die Vrystaat en Gideon Koegelenberg van Makwassie in Noordwes. Mnr.
The world used to cultivate more than 6,000 different plants but about 75% of crop diversity has been lost in the last century and UN experts say we now get about 40% of our calories from three main crops — maize, wheat and rice. That means food supplies are vulnerable if climate change or war causes harvests to fail. The conflict in Ukraine has highlighted the fragility of food supply chains, which when interrupted can cause rising prices and fuel hunger. But the seed bank holds genetic secrets that could help farmers adapt to rising temperatures and drier or wetter conditions by planting more resistant, nutritious and higher-yielding crops as a way to tackle hunger and malnutrition. One in nine people do not have enough food today, while the world population is expected to reach 9.8-billion by 2050.
Public service & administration acting minister Thulas Nxesi has told the country’s more than 1.3-million public servants that he contemplates implementing the contentious final 3% wage hike offer to reduce uncertainties about the fiscal outlook as time is running out ahead of the medium-term budget policy statement (MTBPS). Unions demanded a 10% increase when negotiations began in May but trimmed it to 6.5% to match the headline inflation rate the Reserve Bank has forecast for 2022. The government opened the talks by rejecting all labour’s demands, proposing a wage increase freeze before gradually revising the figure upwards with offers of 1.5% and 2% and the final 3%, including the 1.5% automatic pay progression and continuation of the R1,000 a month post-tax cash gratuity, which started in April 2021 and will end in March 2023.
The Land Bank has finally reached an agreement with the majority but not all of its creditors and hopes to conclude a settlement by the end of the year or end-March 2023 at the latest, chairperson Thabi Nkosi said on Wednesday. “[W]e now have a solution which enjoys the support of the majority of lenders ... we have been able to craft a solution that not only focuses on the repayment of debt but also has the long-term sustainability of the bank at its core,” Nkosi told parliament’s finance committee. The Land Bank has been in default since April 2020, though R17.3bn of the R40.2bn defaulted capital amount had been repaid by early October and servicing the outstanding amount continues.

As expected, lower-cost-producing countries and regions are fast becoming the go-to suppliers for higher-cost, wealthier zones. Globally, what was discussed for years is coming to fruition.

AGRI NEWS NET- Summary of the Week News -9th October 2022
There is widespread agreement that land reform in South Africa has failed to deliver the changes many hoped it would. Racially based dislocation and land dispossession were central features of colonial conquest and apartheid rule.
Permafrost is perennially frozen soil that covers about a quarter of the land in the Northern Hemisphere, particularly in Canada, Russia and Alaska. Much of it is rich with the organic matter of long-dead plants and animals frozen in time.

The technology, which can quantify distress calls made by birds housed in sheds, correctly distinguished distress calls compared to other barn noises with a 97% accuracy level, according to a new study.\
Precision real-time information on seeding depth, covering height and soil density of re-compacting is desirable during seeding, but is still unavailable. Continuous measurements in the soil with innovative sensor technology is offered by some manufacturers, but these measure, for example, the soil temperature, moisture, pH and quantity of organic matter.
