Despite South Africa's national Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination campaign being underway since February 2026, both government and private-sector leaders warn that the country still lacks a reliable, integrated system for recording disease outbreaks and vaccinations.
A farmer can spend months on land prep, inputs, planting, pest control, and weather risk, only to sell a bag of tomatoes for R3,000 at the farm gate. By the time those tomatoes reach a Lagos market, the same bag may sell for R12,000 or more.It looks unfair, but middlemen aren’t just taking a cut.
