Households that had limited access to food decreased from 23,6% in 2010 to 17,8% in 2019, after which this increased to 23,1% by 2023. Simultaneously, the percentage of persons with more limited access to food declined from 25,2% in 2011 to 19,5% in 2019 before increasing to 26,2% by 2023, said Stats SA. Climate change, drought and other environmental factors act as a threat, and we call them threat multipliers because they're worsening food insecurity. If we look at erratic weather patterns, changes in rainfall or more frequent droughts or floods that disrupt agriculture production, droughts reduce crop yields. In contrast, floods can damage crops and infrastructure.

Global meat prices improved (1.6%) MoM, with poultry and bovine meat contributing to the growth. Poultry prices also increased (2.7%) due to consistent imports by Middle East countries amidst persistent supply constraints following widespread avian influenza. Bovine meat prices rose in April due to high import demand, with cattle herd and beef production contracting in the USA despite increased domestic supplies in other leading importing countries. Ovine meat prices rebounded modestly (1.1%) on expectations of seasonal supply tightening in Oceania. However, the pig meat index dropped slightly (-0.2%) due to weak domestic demand in Western Europe and low demand from major importers, mainly China.

The MK manifesto states that the government should “expropriate all land without compensation, transferring ownership to the people under the custodianship of the state and traditional leaders”. This is the direct opposite of the programme of rolling out title deeds and strengthening land tenure that the department is now pursuing.Similarly, the EFF manifesto states that its approach to the resolution of the land question will be “anchored on the principle of expropriation of land without compensation for equal redistribution and use, and for the state to be the custodian of all land in SA.” This policy path is unfavourable for investment, long-term inclusive agricultural growth agenda, and job creation.

Fertilizer markets in general, and urea markets in particular, love a bit of drama and few opportunities are missed to over-react to possible market drivers. This week saw Egyptian gas supplies curtailed, which prompted panic buying of Egyptian urea and added a good $20-30/t to the price. Egyptian gas supplies have been limited for years now as their gas fields are being exhausted, and as summer starts and electricity demand spikes, gas consumption often exceeds supply.  READ MORE

As South Africa's food crisis deepens, the vulnerable suffer the most, particularly mothers and their children.
