South Africa is in the grip of another El Nino event, characterised by below-average precipitation. With the projected harvest of 13.4 million tons of maize (down by 19%), this event is less severe than 2019 when the country harvested 11.3 million tons of maize. The worst decline in maize production, by almost 50% to 7.8 million tons due to El Nino was in 2016. Early in April 2024, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Zambia declared El Nino-induced national disasters, indicating the regionality of the current event and its significant impacts on both domestic and regional food security.

Emissions of nitrous oxide – a greenhouse gas (GHG) said to be more potent than CO2 or methane – continued unabated between 1980 and 2020, a year when more than ten-million metric tons were released into the atmosphere primarily through farming practices, according to a new report by the Global Carbon Project. Agricultural production accounted for 74% of human-driven nitrous oxide emissions in the 2010s – attributed primarily to the use of commercial fertilisers and animal waste on croplands – according to the report ‘Global Nitrous Oxide Budget 2024’, led by researchers from Boston College.

El Nino will adversely affect SA’s food security on two fronts. First, through availability. This year’s harvest of white maize, a staple food, is projected to decline by 2.1 million tons (26%) to 6.4 million tons. This is against domestic consumption of 5.9 million tons. Therefore, the margins of error are slim, and the country will probably need to import white maize.
