Just that " ONE" step ahead-

As climate change sweeps the globe, unleashing extreme weather events, Africa, being a continent where economies are dominated by agriculture, finds itself at a crossroads. It faces a future where the investment required for adapting to climate change and building resilience is still a crucial challenge. Africa is particularly vulnerable to droughts, floods and other climate-related extreme events, with climate change already disrupting traditional agricultural practices and threatening food security. Farmers and food producers across the continent must contend with the adaptation, transition and physical risks that climate change poses to realise the full benefits of sustainable agricultural practices. Transitioning is hampered by a lack of access to important resources such as finance, infrastructure, improved climate-resilient inputs, and technologies that support efficiencies throughout the value chain.

The organic foods industry is a $181.5 BILLION dollar industry as of 2022, with an expected annual growth rate of 11.2% year over year. This industry didn’t even exist until 2002, and was borne out of consumer demand and misinformation. For context, it was worth 26.7 billion dollars in 2010. That is a huge amount of growth for a market that has zero science behind it. Most people have been misled to believe that organic is superior and that’s not your fault. Even the American Academy of Pediatrics has figureheads spouting that lie. Of course people wouldn’t spend more money for something that’s equivalent, so clever messaging is used to insinuate that organic foods are superior. And that is reflected in consumer perception. The number one reason that people opt to purchase organic foods is because they believe that organic foods are healthier, safer, more nutritious, or otherwise superior.

China remains the one factor that could swing the urea market into balance or even over-supply that would halt the current price rise. There is no sign of China returning to urea exporting this year and signals from China point towards them directing urea into the domestic market for their autumn stock building. The probability of Chinese exports coming into the international market is very low at this stage. READ MORE

Precision Agriculture adoption rate in South Africa - Survey

A link to an electronic survey was recently send out on the GrainSA platforms - but I would also like to motivate grain farmers who are not GrainSA members to take a few minute to complete the survey.  We are really excited about the results and the answers that it would bring in terms of the current adoption rate of precision agriculture practices

Project background & details:
The agricultural industry is experiencing improvement in a multitude of agricultural technologies to contribute to positive agricultural growth, production improvements and on-farm sustainability. Technology like auto- steer, variable rate applications of lime, seed and fertiliser, section control, and yield monitors are more accessible than ever. With the current technological improvement, availability, and accessibility, vast amounts of data can be collected electronically on farm-level. This has led to noticeable progress made with what precision agriculture can accomplish in field crop production systems. Not all farmers have fully adopted precision agricultural practices yet, even though these types of technological upgrades are widely available. The assumption is furthermore made that there are various farmers who has access to agricultural technology, but they don’t utilise the applications to their full potential. Various forms of data are collected but decisions based on the collected data are not always optimally implemented due to a lack of knowledge or product understanding.

The rationale behind the questionnaire is thus to define the national degree of precision agriculture adoption with the focus specifically on agricultural technology and collection of big data. Broadening our knowledge on the uptake, adoption, and utilisation of various agricultural technologies on field crop farms within South Africa. Additionally, identify knowledge gaps that could improve the utilisation of agricultural technology and increase on-farm data collection for practical application and decision-making.  KAREN TRUTER
