Botswana is set to lift all remaining restrictions on vegetable imports from South Africa in April 2025, ending a nearly four-year policy that began in 2021 to bolster its domestic agriculture. This follows a partial easing in December 2024 and is expected to benefit South African exporters and Botswana consumers by stabilizing supply chains and reducing prices for vegetables like onions, tomatoes, and potatoes.
The EU is crafting a strategic response to new US tariffs, imposed on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, which include a 20% rate on all EU imports, following earlier 25% tariffs on steel, aluminum, and cars. Despite warnings of a swift and firm reaction, the EU is prioritizing negotiation over escalation, aiming to avoid a trade war. An EU official emphasized balancing effective retaliation with minimizing harm to member states and industries, while keeping dialogue open. Two lists of countermeasures targeting US products are set for mid-April, with further actions planned by month’s end, possibly hitting US services trade surpluses or using a 2023 "anti-coercion" tool affecting business licenses and IP rights.
Ander gewasse: Sojabone (2,4 miljoen ton, +29%), sonneblomsaad (770 000 ton, +22%), grondbone (70 000 ton, +29%), sorghum (140 000 ton, +40%) en droëbone (80 000 ton, +56%) toon sterk groei, deels weens ’n lae basis verlede seisoen.

Agoa ensures South Africa’s citrus is not subject to US tariffs. Duty-free access to the US is by no means unusual. Citrus from Chile and Peru, for instance, enjoys a similar type of access, and additionally benefit from shorter transit times to the US. Agoa thus helps keep South Africa’s citrus competitive in America. READ MORE

Our VIEWPOINT of the Weekend.
With the loss of AGOA benefits and new US tariffs (30% on South African goods, including a baseline 10% plus potential additional levies), South Africa’s Department of Agriculture, with support from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, should prioritize diverting agricultural exports to alternative markets, particularly in the Middle East and Asia.

The global grape market in April 2025 is experiencing diverse trends influenced by seasonal shifts, regional production changes, and export dynamics.
