According to the Reserve Bank’s quarterly report released on Thursday, GDP expanded by 0.6% in the fourth quarter of last year following a revised 0.1% contraction in the third quarter. However, full-year growth eased to 0.6% in 2024 marginally down from 0.7% the year before. Debt-to-income ratio declined to 62.0%, from 62.4% in the third quarter and debt servicing costs eased to 8.9% of disposable income. The share of income households spent on debt repayments dropped slightly to 8.9% in the fourth quarter, down from 9.1% in the third, thanks to slower debt growth and lower interest costs after the November rate cut. Agriculture and mining rebounded in the fourth quarter. Agriculture surged 17.2%, recovering from a 19.7% fall in the third quarter, led by field crops and livestock. Agricultural output shrank by 8.0% in 2024 as El Niño-related weather disruptions hit field crop production.

At the African Farming Agri-Development Imbizo 2025, experts discussed how genetics and breeding technologies can transform South African livestock farming. Moderated by Chris Burgess, the panel featured specialists like Arthur de Villiers, Emmanuel Mudau, Duncan Serapelwane, Sandile Nzuza, Dr. Ben Greyling, and Andrew Aphane. They emphasized that selective breeding and genomic tools, such as DNA testing, enhance cattle resilience, productivity, and disease resistance, reducing guesswork and boosting efficiency. Technologies like artificial insemination (AI), embryo transfer (ET), and sexed semen allow farmers to access elite genetics affordably, leveling the playing field. Data-driven decisions and AI further optimize breeding, though affordability and accessibility remain hurdles, especially for small-scale farmers. Panelists called for partnerships, funding, and training to bridge this gap, with community breeding programs emerging as a cost-sharing solution.
Aanplantings (2025-statistieke): Totale sitrusarea is 101 624 ha, ’n toename vanaf 99 755 ha in 2024.

Until recently, using the words AI and agriculture in the same sentence may have seemed like a strange combination. After all, agriculture has been the backbone of human civilization for millennia, providing sustenance as well as contributing to economic development, while even the most primitive AI only emerged several decades ago. Nevertheless, innovative ideas are being introduced in every industry, and agriculture is no exception. In recent years, the world has witnessed rapid advancements in agricultural technology, revolutionizing farming practices. READ MORE

Climate change is driving shifts in South Africa’s ecosystems, particularly in the semi-arid savannahs and bushveld regions where much of the country’s game thrives. Mean annual temperatures have increased at twice the global average, and rainfall has become more erratic, with prolonged droughts and intense storms becoming more common. These changes affect vegetation, water availability, and food sources, forcing wildlife to adapt or relocate. READ MORE

CRA MEDIA - Actions speak louder than words. So, focus on winning through your actions rather than trying to win an argument. You need to think long-term if you want to maintain power. Consider all the possible outcomes of your actions and plan accordingly. Don’t accept things that people give to you for free. People will think they have power over you if you do. Between 2018 and 2024, South Africa's citrus industry saw its levy income surge by an average of 247.85%, enhancing its financial capacity to fund critical initiatives. These statutory levies, set on a four-year cycle with ministerial approval, support research, transformation, export development, and other functions like administration and market access.

Tyson Giles, director of trading for wheat at CHS, Inc., provided a 2025 spring wheat and durum outlook on March 11, 2025, at the North American Millers’ Association Spring Conference, highlighting concerns over tariffs, market dynamics, and weather.

South Africa’s pome and stonefruit industries are gearing up for the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR), effective in 18 months, shifting from traditional plastic packaging—crucial for long-distance quality—to sustainable alternatives. This transition challenges product quality and waste reduction.

Last week, the national average weaned calf price for animals between 200 and 250 kilograms increased further and is now trading at R34.46 per kilogram, with “off-the-hand” sales also rising to R35.13 per kilogram. Lighter calves between 160 and 200 kilograms, however, declined slightly to R34.09, while heavier calves between 250 and 300 kilograms increased to R33.13 last week.

Our VIEWPOINT of the Weekend.

Nuts, long known for their health benefits, have always been associated with holiday indulgence and the Spring Festival period in China generally sees explosive growth in sales. But with nuts appearing in more and more health-oriented snacks, they are increasingly carving out a special place in our daily shopping carts.

The average banana price dropped by 19% to R11.34 per kilogram or R204 per 18kg box and is now 9% higher than a year ago. We are expecting prices to maintain these slightly higher levels due to volumes still under pressure on the markets

Global rice prices have declined in recent weeks due to slow demand and abundant supply from new harvests, according to multiple reports. The International Grains Council (IGC) noted in its March 20, 2025, Grain Market Report a 3% drop in international rice prices, driven by ample availability and weak buying interest.

Justin Chadwick, CEO of the Citrus Growers Association (CGA) of South Africa for 25 years, is set to retire at the end of March 2025 after a transformative tenure. Starting in 2000 as the CGA’s sole employee during a chaotic post-regulation period, he built it into a robust organization with subsidiaries like the Citrus Academy and hundreds of employees.
