The crisis began in May 2025 with an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Brazil, South Africa's main supplier of mechanically deboned meat (MDM), leading to an import ban.Impact: The ban disrupted supply chains, particularly for affordable processed products like polony and Vienna sausages, which are critical for food security among low-income households. Although the ban was lifted on June 23 after Brazil's HPAI-free declaration, local operational issues at a major supplier further constrained supply, driving up prices.

 South Africa's red meat exports grew positively in 2024, with beef volumes up 30% to 38,657 tonnes, but ongoing foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks (207 cases since 2021) and the absence of a coherent traceability system are limiting competitiveness, according to Red Meat Industry Services (RMIS). This was highlighted at the Western Cape Red Meat Producers Organisation (RPO) annual general meeting during NAMPO Cape in Bredasdorp.Louw van Reenen, executive chairman of Beefmaster Group, emphasized that legislated traceability in Australia and New Zealand has secured premium export markets and prices, urging South African producers to adopt it to access similar opportunities.

Last month, at the Zimbabwe Agricultural Show on August 29, 2025, President Cyril Ramaphosa called Zimbabwe’s land reform “essential” and “ambitious,” tying it to historical justice and food security. He drew parallels to South Africa’s own land struggles, praising Zimbabwe’s push to get black farmers into the game through irrigation, mechanization, and policy shifts. Sounds noble, right?
But here’s the rub: Zimbabwe’s land grab was a disaster, and Ramaphosa’s rosy spin is raising red flags.Zimbabwe’s 1980s reforms under the Lancaster House Agreement were measured, keeping the economy and farms humming for two decades. Then, in 2000, Robert Mugabe’s violent land seizures—without compensation—tore it all apart. White farmers were driven off or killed, banks collapsed under bad bonds, and hyperinflation hit a mind-boggling 89.7 sextillion percent by 2008. The result? A shattered economy, 94% unemployment, mass starvation, and a worthless currency. Zimbabwe, once Africa’s breadbasket, became a failed state where people barter for basics and use rand or dollars. 
The Democratic Alliance’s Willie Aucamp slammed Ramaphosa for “whitewashing” a catastrophe, warning it fuels fears about South Africa’s Expropriation Act of 2025. The FW de Klerk Foundation’s Christo van der Rheede called it “incomprehensible,” urging SA to use its idle state-owned land and skill up new farmers instead of risking property rights. They’re not wrong—Zimbabwe’s collapse shows land reform without structure spells poverty, not progress. 

Ramaphosa’s comments, meant as diplomatic solidarity, feel like a misstep. Praising a failed model spooks investors and farmers already jittery about SA’s land debates. With 2.5 million hectares of state land lying unused, why not focus there? South Africa’s farms need reform with smarts—skills, capital, and clear rules—not a replay of Zimbabwe’s ruin. History’s shouting lessons; let’s hope Ramaphosa’s listening or reading .
