The South African Reserve Bank's (SARB) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meets next week for its penultimate 2025 session, announcing its decision on September 18 amid divided economist views on whether to hold or cut interest rates. Since starting the easing cycle in September 2024, the MPC has reduced the repo rate by 125 basis points to 7.00% (prime lending rate to 10.50%), with the only hold this year in March due to budget uncertainties and US policy risks under the Trump administration. Inflation has cooled below the 3% midpoint target, enabling cuts, but recent hikes in electricity, utilities, food, and beverages are pushing it upward toward 4.5% by 2026 before returning to 3% by 2027.
