Pres. Daar is ’n nuwe dinamika vaardig.

The Southern African Agri Initiative (Saai) board chairperson, Dr Theo de Jager, said the country had reached the point where load shedding could lead to food shedding. "If you think it's bad to sit inthe dark for four hours every night, wait till you get to the point where you have to go to bed hungry," he said.  " We don't need a silver bullet, or a one-size-fits-all solution. We need tailoring solutions where we go from branch to branch in the network and see what kind of production is happening on that branch and handle each one of those productions on its own," he said.

“Horticulture worldwide has embraced the vision of a more sustainable future. In South Africa and the Western Cape as well as other regions this is coupled with growing rural economies, livelihoods and food security.” Water scarcity due to increasing and competing demands and climate change is one of the most pressing challenges globally and in South Africa, especially in the Western Cape province,”  Ivan Meyer said in his opening address.

“These Crime figures come as no surprise, and I also can't see it getting better anytime soon. How can anyone expect police officers at the grassroots level to provide an effective crime prevention service when senior appointments in the SAPS have no operational experience?” says Ronnie Schilling, TLU SA East and Natal, regional manager. This response comes after the announcement earlier this morning of the latest crime statistics. From October 2022 to December 2022, there were 86 murders reported in rural areas with 92 attempted murders. READ MORE

Fitch Ratings has warned that SA’s electricity crisis could weigh on the country’s ratings if it is not properly addressed. In a statement on Wednesday the agency said even though SA still had room to absorb the temporary economic losses from electricity supply shortages at its current rating of BB-, the problem could weigh on ratings if the problems are not addressed over the medium term. Warning that the declaration of a national state of disaster confirms the credit risks facing SA, Fitch said the problem with the issues in the electricity sector, particularly with Eskom, is that they were also a focus of the 2022 state of the nation address but the situation had continued to deteriorate.

French duck farmer Herve Dupouy has culled his flock four times since 2015 to stop the spread of bird flu but as a wave of deadly outbreaks nears his farm once again, he says it’s time to accept a solution once considered taboo: vaccination. “The goal is that our animals don’t fall ill and that they don’t spread the virus,” Dupouy said on his farm in Castelneu-Tursan in southwestern France. “Our job as farmers is not to gather dead animals.” Besides the cost of culling millions of chickens, ducks, turkeys and geese there is also a growing fear among scientists and governments that if the virus becomes endemic, the chances of it mutating and spreading to humans will only increase.

Until now, the wine industry has been reliant on QR codes or bottle tags to prove the source and journey of a wine, however Oritain’s method works by drilling down on the unique chemical footprint of a terroir, which cannot be recreated. It’s the first analysis applied to the actual liquid inside the bottle on a wide scale rather than to the wine’s packaging. READ MORE

DAP prices dropped around $10/t in most regions this week with the lack of demand continuing to be the primary reason. Phosphate producers are getting increasingly jittery about the rising prospect of China opening up phosphate exports in April/May once the Chinese domestic spring season has been supplied. An easing of the Chinese export restrictions that have been in place for more than a year will increase phosphates availability and will pressure prices down. READ MORE

Recent floods have taken a heavy toll on South African farmers who have reported major losses on their farms. Farmers across the country are reporting substantial damage to farms after days of heavy downpours which led to farm floods. In some areas, the damage to fields and crops is so extensive that crop losses are almost 100%. While farmers count their losses, the government has declared a state of disaster in at least seven provinces. Farmers say the declaration must be followed by resources to provide relief to farmers and rebuild critical infrastructure .Natural disasters taking their toll In KwaZulu-Natal, one of the hardest hit provinces. Farmers in the area suffered a lot of damage to their infrastructure, planting lands, as well as the bridge over the Buffalo River.

Poultry will continue to be the fastest growing meat over the next decade and by 2031 will take 47% of the market, according to the latest OECD/FAO Agricultural Outlook. The long-term shift towards poultry will continue to strengthen, in part due to a preference for white meat among high-income countries.
