Precision fermentation is a relatively new food technology that is rapidly entering the mainstream. Products such as milk protein, animal fats, collagen, honey, lobster, egg whites and more are receiving hundreds of millions of investor dollars. They are being rapidly commercialized for the mass market without the raising and killing of animals. These products are being marketed to a young consumer base that wants sustainable, climate-friendly foods that buck the system and promise a better tomorrow. But what should consumers being asking about this new wave of food technologies?
Farmers who rely on irrigation have expressed concern that persistent load-shedding is negatively affecting production. In key field crops, about 20% of maize, 15% of soybean, 34% of sugar cane and nearly half of wheat production is produced under irrigation. Fruits and vegetables also rely heavily on irrigation and thus face similar challenges. In red meat, poultry, piggery, wool and dairy there are also concerns that load-shedding beyond stage 2 makes operations and planning challenging as these industries all require continuous power for their usual activities. Similarly, agribusinesses in various downstream processing activities, such as milling, bakeries, abattoirs, wine processing, packaging and animal vaccine production, face similar challenges. Exporting agribusinesses, especially those with products highly sensitive to delays such as fruits, red meat and wine, are also worried about SA port activities, which fortunately haven’t been primarily affected. The financial impact on agribusinesses or on food security more broadly is not yet clear and will be difficult to quantify. There are also food security concerns as the effect of load-shedding will probably show in the volumes of products to be harvested/produced in the coming months due to the time lag in agricultural production stages.
Most CEOs believe global economic growth will decline over the next 12 months, PwC’s latest Annual Global CEO Survey has found. The survey, which polled 4 410 CEOs in 105 countries and territories, revealed that 73% of CEOs were pessimistic about growth prospects. The poll was conducted during October and November 2022. PWC noted in its report that the bleak outlook was the most pessimistic by CEOs regarding global economic growth in just over a decade, a departure from the optimistic outlooks of 2021 and 2022 when more than two-thirds (76% and 77% respectively) thought economic growth would improve.
The highest peak demand last year was 31.8GW, which was recorded on June 2. For the rest of last year, the peak demand ranged between 23GW and 26GW. The electricity system in South Africa therefore has enough installed capacity to cater for demand, operating reserves and maintenance (planned and unplanned outages). Which begs the big question: What happened, from a technical point of view, that led to frequent load shedding last year? It is common knowledge that, in operating an old fleet, maintenance is typically higher than when operating a relatively new fleet of assets. It is puzzling that Eskom got this wrong. READ MORE
The reality, 28 years on, is that the current state of the land reform programme has left many communities feeling that they are set up for failure. They are unable to access finance and markets, they have no clear water usage rights, and they lack the technical expertise to manage productive land. If implemented effectively, the proposed changes could make a real difference in South Africa's land reform. READ MORE

Of the 1 340 important ports across the world, at least 87% are exposed to dangerously disruptive hydrometereological events, a study by the Environmental Chinge Institute (ECI) at Oxford University has found.
Mid-month data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) points to a smaller drop in prices for petrol and diesel in February 2023 due to rising international petroleum costs. According to the CEF’s data, as at 13 January 2023, petrol prices are expected to come down by as much as 25 cents a litre, while diesel is on track for a 50 to 60 cents per litre drop.
