Farmers in South Africa progressively increased the area under soya bean from about 516,500ha in the 2012/13 season to the current 1.15-million hectares. Along the way the seed breeders and regulators also ensured that high-yielding seed varieties were used. The improvements in seed, fertiliser and other inputs caused soya bean yields to improve from an average of 1.5t/ha in 2012/13 to about 2.4t/ha in 2022/23. This combination of yield improvement and larger hectarage has led to the expected record soya bean crop of 2.7-million tonnes in the 2022/23 production season. READ on AGRI NEWS NET
In the run-up to the 2023 wine grape harvest, January to April, the fourth estimate by viticulturists and producer cellars indicates a smaller crop than in 2022, and smaller than the previous three estimates published during the 2023 harvest season. The harvest is predicted to be smaller than the 2022 harvest. Winemakers and viticulturists are however in agreement – the excellent quality grapes hold a big promise for the making of remarkable wines," says Conrad Schutte, manager of the Vinpro team of viticulturists that issues the crop estimate together with industry body South African Wine Industry Information and Systems organization (SAWIS).
Yields in Africa’s smallholder-based farming system have remained stubbornly below the global average for years. The continent is not producing enough of its own food and spends almost $50bn annually importing food, a figure which is predicted to double by 2030 if productivity gains cannot be achieved.
Commercial actors must meet the actual costs of the harm they cause if further damage is to be prevented. Governments will need to hold commercial actors to account. And norms need to be reshaped in the public interest, drawing attention to the right to health and the governmental obligation to protect health, not just corporate freedoms. READ MORE
We live in a time of higher food prices, part of the global polycrisis triggered by the pandemic and Russia's war on Ukraine, which caused seizures in supply chains and pushed up energy and food prices. In short, this is not unique to South Africa. READ MORE
Alcohol is the third-leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., and alcoholic liver disease kills 22,000 Americans every year. Risk of liver disease is greatest among heavy drinkers, but one report found that drinking just two alcoholic beverages a day for five years can damage the liver. One drink per day, Hazen said, increases the risk of heart attack and stroke by 10 to 20 percent. READ MORE
