In 2022, the World Economic Forum estimated that there are well over 600 million smallholder farmers around the world working on less than two hectares of land. These farmers are estimated to produce 28%-31% of the total crop production and 30%-34% of food supply on 24% of gross agricultural area. A further study done by the United Nations showed that the world population will reach 9.1 billion by 2050, and to feed that number of people, global food production will need to grow by 70%. For Africa, which is projected to be home to about 2 billion people by then, farm productivity must accelerate at a faster rate than the global average to avoid continued mass hunger.

Benoude katte maak benoude spronge.

It is roughly a year since the signing of the Agriculture and Agro-processing Master Plan (AAMP). The plan has been hailed as the commitment of value chain actors in agriculture and food sectors to build a competitive, transformed, and growing agricultural economy that also creates sustainable jobs and ensures food security in the country. The AAMP is effectively an operational framework that seeks to fast-track the implementation of the National Development Plan goals, which were also affirmed in the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan. The value chain players, together with the government, agreed that the AAMP interventions must be implemented in a private-public approach capitalising on skills, resources, and knowledge available at industries and state, including labour and civil society. Sifiso Ntombela.

It is well known that alternative proteins can carry sustainable and ethical advantages over meat, but are we sacrificing our health for the planet’s? Alternative proteins are vital for the future of food. The European Commission’s Farm to Fork Strategy has identified them as key to the transition to a sustainable food system  and, despite being on the market for hundreds of years, their popularity continues to grow. READ MORE

In this respect, too, the state of alternative proteins today is comparable to that of renewable energy. Renewable energy was once generally more expensive than fossil fuels. Now in many, maybe even most, parts of the world, wind and solar are actually cheaper than new fossil fuel power plants.  READ MORE

The agricultural, cereal, and export price indices closed 4%, 4%, and 2% higher, respectively, than two weeks ago.

South Africa's agricultural exports amounted to US$2,9 billion in the first quarter of 2023, up 5% from the last quarter of 2022 (but down 2% y/y). The top exportable products were grapes, maize, apples and pears, wine, wool, apricots and peaches, sugar, fruit juices, and soybeans, amongst other products.

“The global medical cannabis industry is estimated to generate $82.9-billion by 2027. Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, a new report expects Canada’s recreational marijuana industry to double revenues this year and grow more than 500% by 2025,” the report says. It says the size of the South African cannabis industry is estimated at R28-billion. Interpol rates South Africa as the fourth-largest producer in the world.

PwC has warned that South Africa is at risk of heightened food insecurity with load-shedding, adverse weather, and deteriorating infrastructure disrupting the country’s food supply.

Phosphorous is classified as one of the three nutrients essential for good plant growth and crop yield. Available from Nulandis USA, Rappid is a high analysis liquid polyphosphate (Polyphosphate:orthophosphate ratio of 90:10) fertilizer with a near neutral PH, allowing it to even be applied with select pesticides.

Lions are among the most iconic and charismatic animals in the world. They are revered for their strength, beauty, and social behavior. They are also important for the balance and diversity of ecosystems, as they are apex predators that regulate the populations of their prey and competitors.

The uncertainty around how Russia`s war on Ukraine will play out this year and the war`s role in creating global instability means that the trouble on the inflation front is not over yet. Food and fuel inflation will remain a persistent economic problem.

Domestic new-vehicle sales in June increased by 14%, to 46 810 units, compared with the same month last year. The new-passenger-car market reached 29 795 units last month – a gain of 0.8% over June last year. The rental industry accounted for 13.4% of car sales last month.

South Africa is experiencing disappointing structural growth after the Covid-19 pandemic, due to international and national disasters such as Russia’s invasion in Ukraine, the collapse of local public services and the collapse of Eskom.
