The blended financial instrument includes grants and loans, ranging between R500,000 and R1.5-million. The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development will contribute R500-million towards the grant aspect of the fund, while the Land Bank will match that with R710-million for the loan portion. Small-scale farmers can receive financing in the form of a 70% grant and a 30% loan, with the grant set at a maximum of R500,000. For medium-scale farmers, 50% will be a grant with a 50% loan capped at R1-million. Large-scale and mega commercial producers are eligible for a 30% grant and a 70% loan capped at R1.5-million.

The Reserve Bank has called on the government to lower fuel prices, which have been a major driver of inflation and a burden for consumers. In a study published in August, the Bank identified four ways to improve price-setting mechanisms. The paper, written by the two economists at the Bank, Zaakirah Ismail and Christopher Wood, comes as fuel price hikes are expected to hit in September due to the weaker rand and rising international oil prices. The Bank’s priority is to maintain price stability through its inflation-targeting framework, and it has struggled to keep rates at the 4.5% midpoint of the 3%-6% range, due mainly to high fuel and food prices. The petrol price fell slightly in July, but rose again in August and is projected to increase 160c/litre in September, adding 0.3% to the monthly inflation rate.

China has four overarching strategic interests in Africa. First, it wants access to natural resources, particularly oil and gas. It is estimated that, by 2020, China will import more oil worldwide than the United States. To guarantee future supply, China is heavily investing in the oil sectors in countries such as Sudan, Angola, and Nigeria. READ MORE

Five main environmental crime areas are identified, namely (a) illegal logging and timber trade; (b) illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing; (c) illegal mining and mineral extraction; (d) illegal trade in controlled chemicals, hazardous waste and ozone-depleting substances; and e) poaching and illegal trade in wild species (this is what is more commonly known as wildlife crime). El Niño events are the warm phases of ENSO, occurring when the sea surface temperature in the Niño 3.4 region of the Pacific Ocean reaches +0.5°C above average. Further increases from the norm indicate stronger El Niño conditions. The inverse is true for La Niña events. When El Niño events arise, the interactions between the ocean and atmosphere create temporary changes to weather systems across most of the globe, resulting in extreme weather conditions which can cause devastating yield losses.

Global energy-related emissions of carbon dioxide hit a record high last year, although more clean technology such as solar power and electric vehicles helped limit the impact of increased coal and oil use, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said.

Farmers have been thrown a lifeline with a blended finance instrument that aims to tackle the negative impacts of rolling blackouts on productivity faced by agricultural producers, said Thoko Didiza, the minister of agriculture, land reform and rural development, at a media briefing in Pretoria on Tuesday.

The responsible use of antibiotics is critical to maintaining herd health. Yet, the SA cattle production industry is battling the the prophylactic use of antibiotics in the treatment of diseases in cattle. This leads to misuse of antibiotics, which in turn causes antibiotic resistance.

Playing their part in alleviating the youth unemployment crisis in South Africa, United Exports is creating valuable work experience for talented youth over the next year.

The data released this afternoon by South Africa’s Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) paints a positive picture of the 2022/23 summer crop season and the 2023/24 winter crop season. Regarding the summer crops, we have the seventh 2022/23 summer crop production estimates, and these data are unlikely to change in the following three updates for the season.

The Department of Public Enterprises has entered into a Collaboration Framework Agreement with the China Development Bank (CDB) which the department says will enhance the sustainability of State-Owned Companies (SOCs).
