A block train pilot project saw cargoes being loaded and delivered in 10 days – a third of the normal time. According to André van der Vyver, CEO of the South African Cereals and Oilseeds Trade Association (Sacota), this is unheard of and the process can take 30 days or more if managed by Transnet. In March, Sacota asked Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) to reintroduce a block train for its members. A block train consists of a series of wagons carrying the same type of cargo and destined for the same location. The key characteristic of a block train is that it moves as a complete unit from its point of origin to its final destination, without stopping or shuffling of wagons along the route. This reduces the time and complexity of the journey. “It increases the bulk grain export volumes transported by rail and reduces wagon turnaround time,” says Van der Vyver
While markets reflect simmering uncertainty over the path forward for interest rates in South Africa, fund managers are convinced that the country has hit its peak, and the next move from the Reserve Bank will be a cut. Bank of America’s (BofA) latest Fund Manager Survey shows that investors are confident that the South African Reserve Bank won’t hike rates again. This represents a complete shift in expectations from just a month ago, where 79% of fund managers polled by the bank expected the ‘next’ repo move (in July) to be upwards.
Peter Setou, the chief executive of the Vumelana Advisory Fund, a non-profit organisation that supports land reform beneficiaries to make their land productive, points out that the absence of effective governance within many CPAs, which serve as legal entities responsible for overseeing the administration of claimed lands, stands as a significant barrier deterring potential investments.
Chances are that you haven't thought a lot about the soil under your feet, but you may be surprised at the complexity of soil. Soil varies in its composition and the structure of its particles, and these factors are closely examined by farmers, who need appropriate soil for planting crops, as well as engineers who may need to understand how soil is going to hold up under different demands. The World Farmers’ Organisation agreed to report Saai’s family farmer resolution against farm killings and the poor security situation in the South African countryside to the United Nations. The World Farmers’ Organisation adopted resolutions in 2015 and 2017 in which the world’s agricultural leaders pledged their support and sympathy to South African farmers as victims of incited violence. With the launch of the United Nations Decade of Family Farmers in 2019 in Rome, reference was made to the impact of farm killings and expropriation without compensation on the sustainability of agriculture in countries such as South Africa, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Eastern Congo and Northern Nigeria. Hypotheses for the cause of this hyperthermal (short-lived warming) event have included destabilization of methane hydrates (ice-like solids of methane and water) due to orbital forcing (changes in incoming solar radiation due to variation in the tilt of the Earth's axis and orbit) and uplift of the land causing weathering of marine rocks. South Africa's consumer food inflation continued to slow in July 2023, recorded at 10,0% from 11,1% in the previous month. The product prices underpinning this deceleration are primarily bread and cereals; meat; fish; and oils and fats. While there are renewed risks in global agriculture, such as India's decision to ban specific categories of rice exports and the Black Sea Grain Deal Initiative that facilitated grains and oilseeds exports from Ukraine terminated, we are still optimistic that South Africa's consumer food inflation will continue to slow during this second half of the year. COFFEE
Coffee is a vital crop for developing countries, providing vital foreign exchange earnings and an income for farmers. It is also an ideal crop for areas with poor infrastructure, as it is one of the few tropical horticultural crop products that can be stored for relatively long periods without perishing.
There are two main species of economic importance: Coffea canephora which produces coffee known commercially as Robusta, and Coffea arabica which produces Arabica.
Coffee is indigenous to the highlands of Ethiopia and the Boma plateau in the Sudan. Here, some 1 300 to 1 800 metres above sea level, coffee trees occur naturally. Today coffee is grown across the world.
South Africa deeply appreciates China’s support in addressing our current energy challenges. This includes the donation of emergency power equipment worth R167 million and availing a grant of approximately R500 million as development assistance,
The New Development Bank (NDB), the Shanghai-based lender better known as the “BRICS bank”, has thrown its weight behind the plan by its founding member countries to push for the use of local currencies to facilitate trade and transactions.
WhatsApp and Facebook groups have revolutionised farming, and emerging farmers who use these platforms for sharing information and marketing are reaping the benefits.
Staple food prices continue to rise placing pressure on higher-end produce like avocados. Compared with the same period last year, potatoes were trading 77% higher, with carrots trading 6% higher.
Speeding coal trains operated by Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) killed two white rhinos, eight buffalos, six impalas and a wildebeest – all in one day.A giraffe that collided with a locomotive lost a leg in the incident and had to be euthanised, bringing the overall number of wildlife killed by speeding freight trains last Friday, 18 August, to 18.
South Africa's agricultural interests in the BRICS markets are not at the expense of the existing and vital export markets in the African continent, EU, Asia, Americas, Middle-East and others.

South Africa (SA) is in the enviable position of being a net exporter of agricultural products. Aside from the obvious contribution this makes to SA’s GDP and job creation, this, combined with excellent local production and 2 prior years of record exports, are the main reasons why SA has been able to ensure food security and curb food price inflation compared to the rest of the world.
As climate change and drought make water an ever-scarcer commodity in New Mexico, a report last month by the non-governmental organization Food and Water Watch found agriculture is using more than 80% of the state’s fresh water.
Infectious diseases are far from eradicated and biosecurity will remain essential for a long time, warns Susan Rodakis, technical manager for swine and poultry at animal health company Zoetis.
