South Africans are facing the possibility of a chickenless festive season this year owing to a perfect storm of supply shortages and rapid price hikes, says meat wholesaler Hume International. D Fred Hume cites data from the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group finding that the price of a 10 kg bag of frozen chicken rose by nearly 3%, or R11.33, in just 30 days – from R383.37 in July to R394.70 in August. Hume expects this high price trend to increase further as local market pressures hit supply chains. He attributes the runaway prices to three major causes, including non-tariff trade barriers that have blocked imports from major international suppliers; anti-dumping duties levied against South Africa’s most important poultry trading partners; and “underwhelming” supply from local producers that is being exacerbated by an ongoing bird flu epidemic.
Out of the 1 402 farm attacks and farm murder incidents recorded by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the past four years (from 2019 to 2022), convictions have so far been made in only 66 cases. This means that more than 95% of all these atrocities are still unsolved. The report shows, among other things, that not a single successful prosecution of farm murders was made in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the North West or the Northern Cape during the investigation period. “This despite the fact that the improvement of crime investigations and an increase in the number of prosecutions of all crimes committed in rural areas was set out as an explicit objective in the SAPS’ National Rural Safety Strategy (NRSS) that was implemented in 2019.
AfriForum has been involved in responding to farm attacks and murders since the organisation was established as part of the Solidarity Movement in 2006. This response initially involved various awareness raising campaigns both in South Africa and abroad. Local campaigns include lobbying the South African government to recognise farm murders as a priority crime, marches and peaceful protests against farm murders and sending petitions to the Minister of Police, while international campaigns include informing and addressing international organisations such as the United Nations about the phenomenon of farm attacks. Dr. Fred Provenza and his colleagues have done more than 40 years’ worth of research looking at the benefits of a more varied diet on the health of livestock,” he said. “What they have found very definitively is that the more varied the diet, the healthier they are and the better they perform. It increases their performance whether we're talking about gain performance, reproductive status or health. They have far less mortality and morbidity. It even positively affects their epigenetics.” READ MORE
The future success of the wine industry depends on its ability to counteract the effects of extreme weather shifts – from the wildfires that cost Californian vintners an estimated $3.7 billion in 2020, to the frosts that cost French growers €2bn in 2021, to
drought and extreme heat that costs winemakers billions collectively in regions across the world every year. It is also in everyone’s interests for wineries to find ways to reduce their carbon footprint and stop contributing to greenhouse gas production. READ MORE
