Business leaders who serve on the national energy crisis committee (Necom), which has been put in charge of implementing the Energy Action Plan, say that while the country is likely to experience high stages of load-shedding (stages 4 to 6) for the rest of 2023, they are confident that Eskom’s generation turnaround plan will start showing real results from next year. This, together with about 4,000MW of capacity that will return to service or be commissioned at Kusile power station between September and December, will help ease load-shedding in 2024.
If food processors and retailers accounted for all these cost increases across the value chain, consumers would face a much sharper price increase. But this was not the case in South Africa. Food prices increased at a moderate pace (compared to other countries), averaging 9.5% in 2022, compared with 6.5% year on year in 2021. Countries like the US, Brazil and the EU had higher consumer food price inflation rates. This suggests that food processors and retailers absorbed some costs. Notably, while the consumer food price inflation averaged 9.5% in 2022, the producer price inflation for agriculture at the same time was 15% and for food manufacturers 12.3%.
A Mpumalanga community complained that it would not get the additional nine farms it had claimed. This after a well-known anthropologist had allegedly argued that it was “overcompensated”. The Matsamo Communal Property Association (CPA) is a beneficiary of prime agricultural land worth over R800 million in Nkomazi, near Malalane. Its reclaimed properties include mango, litchi, orange, grapefruit, sugarcane and pawpaw plantations. The additional nine farms, the CPA claimed, were unlikely to be returned because Dr At Fischer, who was hired by the department of rural development and land reform to verify claimants, allegedly said in his report, concluded about a decade ago, that the Matsamo CPA of 1 500 families already had more than enough land given back to them.
The Chief Land Claims Commissioner and the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development were unsuccessful in their attempt to prevent the Southern African Agri Initiative (SAAI) from accessing information on land claims in South Africa. A court judgement and order from 19 September 2023 highlights the departments' "lackadaisical behaviour" as a primary reason for their failure. Over the years, Saai has fielded complaints from farmers who believe that the development or potential sale of their farms has been hindered by unfounded or slow-moving land claims. Emerging farmers in regions such as Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, and Limpopo have raised concerns about being evicted from their properties due to unverified and dubious land claims, often allegedly enforced by politically connected individuals. Consequently, Saai approached the Chief Land Claims Commissioner and the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land Reform to grant access to the comprehensive database of land claims submitted since the initiative's inception on 18 December 1998.

Suid-Afrika se Gini is buitengewoon hoog. Rusland s’n is betreklik laag teen 0,37.
Eskom’s performance has deteriorated significantly after former CEO Andre de Ruyter’s departure and the appointment of Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. On 22 February, Eskom announced that De Ruyter had left the power utility with immediate effect following a special board meeting.
Industry body Agri SA has warned that government interference in the food market could lead to empty supermarket shelves. The organisation intends to write to the Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development Minister Thoko Didiza to request engagement with stakeholders in the value chain on the implications of government’s stated intention of tackling food pricing.
The South African government voiced concerns about the higher food prices and instructed the cabinet’s economic cluster to implement a food security plan to cushion consumers. We have yet to see the government’s strategy and approach.
Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has completed the revetment project at the Port of Port Elizabeth’s tanker berth and berth 14 three months ahead of schedule.
Greenpeace and other environmental NGOs are attacking glyphosate in view of the EU 's final judgment on its possible renewal. The arguments are always the same, alarmist in tone, empty in content. Pseudo-ecological NGOs live on donations and these multiply thanks to two very specific levers, namely alarmism and the media visibility that derives from this.
The debate between conventional tillage and no-till has farmers considering environmental benefits and creating an optimal seed bed by burying crop residue.Strip tillage might provide a middle ground.
Nigeria’s ginger exports have increased by 17% in the second quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, according to the country’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). This meant income of N10 billion (€12 million).
South Africa’s manufacturing and mining production activity got off to a worse-than-expected start in the third quarter.
Fresh efforts are being made to increase the share of black ownership in South Africa’s agricultural sector. This follows decades of missteps and badly designed interventions that have failed to significantly change the ownership patterns in the sector.
