The annual Nguni Cattle Breeders’ Society’s National Auction took place on 21 November 2020 at Urth Lifestyle Centre in Bloemfontein. The auction was presented by NetAuctions (Bloemfontein) and live-streamed via Facebook.
The auction was held on a lovely, rainy day and the prices were fascinating. The average price for a bull at the auction was R68 000.00, with the average for a cow with calf reaching a smashing R18 142.86. Pregnant cows were sold for an average price of R23 166.67, pregnant heifers for R14 000.00, and the average price for three in one’s was R16 000.00.
Oliver Radford from Radford Ngunis, located in the vicinity of Bloemfontein, bought a bull from Glenam Knott of Qhina Ngunis for an impressive R185 000.00. Glenam is extremely pleased with the sale as he considers the bull to be “close to the complete package with good conformation, coat, temperament, performance figures and excellent blood lines.” Oliver, who has been farming with Nguni cattle for approximately three years, says that he values the hardiness, the toughness and the fertility of the “superior” Nguni damline.
He considers this bull to be a “physical, superior specimen due to his sheer presence, magnificent length, superb hindquarter muscles, and amazing shoulder depth,” and has also previously bought another bull and several females from Glenam. Glenam also bought a female cow with heifer calf from Nico Harris of Matatane Ngunis for R32 000.00. Glenam, who has been farming with Nguni’s since 2004 on his farm near Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape, explains that the cow caught his eye as “she is well put together and has a beautiful heifer calf.
I am hopeful that the cow will breed well in my herd as she was bred out of well-known blood lines,” says Glenam. The Nguni Cattle Breeders’ Society’s congratulates all the buyers on, and thanks them for, their purchases. Gert Coetsee and the staff from NetAuctions must also be commended on the organisation of a successful auction. The Society would like to thank their partners Urth Lifestyle Centre, Sky Country Meats and SecuriForce Group of Companies for their contribution to the success of the day.
