  • Premier Group’s proposed closure of its Tulbagh fruit-processing plant shows the scale of the pressure: a factory that processes 60,000 tonnes of fruit a year, spends about R300 million annually with local farmers, and accounts for nearly half of South Africa’s remaining fruit-canning capacity. Around 200 to 220 growers, many growing varieties specifically for canning, supply the plant.
  • Between 2016 and 2024, international clients killed almost 300,000 wild animals in South Africa. The 2024 breakdown includes lions, elephants, rhinos, and leopards — the species we put on postcards. But it also includes baboons, otters, honey badgers, monkeys, and squirrels.
