Maize meal remains a staple crop in SA and when grain prices increase, as was experienced globally after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it affects especially the most vulnerable people in society. However, SA’s status as a net maize exporter provides a degree of protection when international prices soar.  An El Niño-driven drought in SA and other parts of Southern Africa affected grain harvests this season. While some of SA’s neighbours to the north are facing shortages that will have to be met with imports, SA will still produce sufficient maize to meet local demand despite the crop being about 15% smaller than in 2023.

Despite traditionally not being considered fashionable as a career choice, an increasing number of young South Africans are pursuing farming, with many achieving not only survival but success in this critical economic sector. Statistics South Africa recently revealed that youth aged 15 to 34 constitute over one-third of the nation's population. However, unemployment rates among this demographic range from 40% to 50%. In sampled rural households, 51.5% are actively seeking employment, while only about 10% are self-employed.

In the first fifteen days of June 2024, there were eight farm attacks and three farm murders in South Africa. During the month of May 2024, there were eleven farm attacks and four farm murders. In April 2024, there were sixteen farm attacks and two farm murders. In March 2024, there were twelve farm attacks and no farm murders in the country. Farm attacks and murders in South Africa are often accompanied by extreme violence, torture and rape and are being openly fueled by black South African leaders in the country.

As humanity continues to burn fossil fuels, the delicate balance of life on Earth is changing. That’s true of trees, many of which are growing faster as a result of increased carbon dioxide (CO₂) concentrations in our atmosphere. But not all trees are responding in this way. In particular, eucalypts – Australia’s iconic forest trees – haven’t benefited from the increase in CO₂ as they were expected to. Phosphorus is crucial to the process of photosynthesis that makes trees grow. Phosphorus in soil is provided by bugs known as microbes. These micro-organisms break down dead and decaying matter, and in the process change phosphorus into a form that plants can take up with their roots.

Cooler and wetter spring weather in many melon-growing countries has led to lower fruit ripening and a slower start to the season. The demand was slightly lower because the cold and rainy weather in Central and Northern Europe did not stimulate consumption. The bad weather during early spring together with a slight decrease in plantings caused lower early yields in Spain.

Drought is expected to drop China’s wheat and corn output, which could lead to increased imports from the nation that hasn’t made major purchases recently due to oversupply and declining consumption, Bloomberg reported, citing BOABC, a China-based agriculture consultancy.

A Norwegian company has run up 500 hours of ship operation using oil made from the shells of cashew nuts. The company, United European Car Carriers (UECC), has four vessels in its short-sea vehicle carrier fleet running a 2 500-hour biofuel trial project using the new biofuel, which is supplied by a Netherlands-based company ACT Group.

The banana price increased by 5% to R7.89 per kilogram or R142 per 18kg box with volumes decreasing by 19% week on week. We are however expecting prices to stay on a lower level during June and July. The latest apple price increased to R8.53 last week while the latest pear price traded higher on R9.75 per kilogram. We expect that Apple prices can trend mostly sideways over the short term while pears can continue to increase.
