The recent High Court ruling against the department of agriculture, land reform and rural development regarding compensation for poultry culled due to bird flu has sent ripples through SA’s poultry industry. The industry stands at a crossroads, with the promise of financial relief and a renewed commitment to effective disease management practices. The court’s decision challenges the government’s long-standing “nil compensation” policy and has implications for disease management and financial stability within the sector. Agriculture union TLU spokesperson Bennie van Zyl, articulated a comprehensive response to the ruling, emphasising the necessity for a holistic approach to disease management.

It is now widely accepted that low- and middle-income countries will need to spend trillions of dollars a year for climate-related adaptation, mitigation, and resilience. It is also clear that while governments will have to mobilize the better part of this financing domestically, a substantial share will need to come from external public and private sources. For example, emerging market and developing economies other than China will have to spend about $2.4 trillion a year by 2030, according to estimates by the Independent High-Level Expert Group on Climate Finance, commissioned by the United Nations Climate Change Conferences of 2021 and 2022. About $1  trillion a year of that will have to come from external sources.

Expectations for food inflation are driven by multiple factors, including agricultural commodity prices and costs in the supply chain. While the weaker domestic summer crop will likely see inflation on maize meal rise in the coming months, a critical factor that influences both the cost of primary agricultural commodities and several costs in the value chain is the exchange rate. Exchange rate depreciation for much of 2023 was a critical contributor to sustained high food inflation, but the value of the Rand strengthened substantially in June this year. This follows improved sentiments following the election result, which ushered in the first coalition government in South Africa since the dawn of democracy. Markets responded positively to the formation of the Government if National Unity and while key factors such as cabinet positions are yet to be finalised, a stable partnership in this regard could result in further exchange rate appreciation, which would in turn reduce inflation further.

The rumours of an Indian Urea tender that have been circulating for weeks were proven true as the announcement was made this week. Despite Indian urea stocks at historical highs, they are apparently looking for up to 1 million tons of urea – no doubt based on their view that prices will only get higher as the year moves on. With the change to a full democracy in South Africa, one of the important issues was the need to address the unequal racial ownership and use of rural land. The Native Trust and Land Act of 1914, as amended in 1936, restricted land allocation and use in “white” areas for white ownership only and was also used to effect land evictions of black communities in these areas. One statistic which was often quoted was the fact that in apartheid South Africa, 14% of the population owned 86% of the rural farmland. In black tribal areas, land to this day is not under private ownership but owned by the state. READ MORE

Raspberry growing and supply is increasing across many countries in the Northern Hemisphere to meet the usual summer demand. Germany has seen an early start to their season. The prospects in terms of yield and quality are quite good, but prices vary greatly from region to region. Switzerland is seeing the first promotions with domestic product starting soon.

Water is crucial to all life, rain and snow are crucial to all life on land. Healthy ecosystems play a crucial role in producing precipitation by maintaining the water cycle through various mechanisms. Forests, including tropical rainforests, temperate forests, and boreal forests, are significant contributors.

Prosper Africa has announced the United States – Africa Trade Desk (USATD)'s first $56M trade deal for 700 containers (1,260,000 crates) of South African-grown table grapes to the U.S. The U.S.-Africa Trade Desk is a joint venture between Prosper Africa and Afritex Ventures, whose mandate is to bridge the gap between African agricultural suppliers and US buyers.

The prospect of ample supplies, despite weather problems in some producing regions, is pushing oilseeds prices lower. The Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture said on June 12 in its Oilseeds: World Markets and Trade report that the US soybean oil price premium compared to other major exporters has declined, and the United States is expected to be a net soybean oil exporter in 2024-25.

Climate change poses significant challenges to agriculture, and government officials in Italy are growing concerned over dwindling food production. Italy's national statistics bureau, ISTAT, said that agricultural production shrank in 2023 as "wine, fruit and olive oil output all took a hit from extreme weather events linked to climate change."

Following a sustained period of decline, global cereals prices rose in May across wheat, maize, barley, and sorghum markets. This was driven by unfavorable crop conditions in some major producing regions in the Northern Hemisphere such as Europe, North America, and the Black Sea regions. Moreover, persistent disruptions on major shipping routes, including the Black Sea and Red Sea, adds to the cost of moving products.

5G technology supports precision farming by allowing real-time data transmission and machine control. For instance, drones equipped with multispectral cameras capture crop images, which are processed on local servers via 5G. This data guides fertilizer spreaders integrated into the network, ensuring precise application based on real-time needs.

An ongoing trade dispute between China and the EU is having a knock-on effect for pig producers throughout Europe and the UK. EU pork exports to China have come under scrutiny and will be subject to a yearlong anti-dumping investigation by China’s Ministry of Commerce, in retaliation for duties being imposed on Chinese electric vehicles by the EU.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) announced that South Africa has requested the establishment of two dispute settlement panels to examine European Union measures affecting the importation of citrus from South Africa into the EU.
