-Welcome to our world- the real world of Farming and Agriculture in South Africa- Local and International news-

This AGRI NEWS RUSH -Some of the news stories of this week-, SUNDAY EDITIONALWAYS ON TIME  -

News Comments  - Internationally shared - Nothing Sensational.  News platform of the real commercial farmers of South Africa .

Just that " ONE" step ahead-  Always on time- 7 days of the week - 365 days of the year- This commitment.

Germany is the biggest market for organic food in Europe, while Demeter—the biodynamic certification—is regularly voted among the top three most trusted brands. A team at Hochschule Geisenheim decided to find out if this embrace of organic food translated into a desire for organic wines, and launched a representative survey. The study began in 2009, was done again in 2016, and then again in 2020.  Prof Gergely Szolnoki said they discovered that highly involved wine consumers are more likely to choose organic wines. They also tend to have more disposable income.

Agritourism and Farming and Agriculture can be huge- Proper marketing of the unique and premium Karoo Lamb that most produce would bring the much-needed revenue, which would be reinvested in the farms, and ultimately, increased economic activity in the regions and job creation. The marketing of the Karoo Lamb requires societal support and is viewed as South African heritage food. This means that as we shop at our various retailers across South Africa this festive season, we must ask the store managers about the Karoo Lamb, great South African wines, fruits, and our other high-quality regional foods. The provincial government also has a vital role in improving the road networks and ensuring that municipalities are functioning effectively. This is vital in ensuring the success of tourism in the province.

In its Dec. 10 WASDE report, the USDA said “the global wheat outlook for 2024-25 is for lower supplies, consumption, and trade and slightly higher ending stocks.” “Supplies decline 600,000 tonnes to 1.060 billion, as larger beginning stocks are more than offset by lower global production,” the USDA said. “Production is forecast lower for the European Union, down 1.3 million tonnes, to 121.3 million, on harvest data showing lower production for several Member States.”

The Rand strengthened over the past week and is currently trading at R17.85 to the US dollar, with economic growth shrinking by 0.3% over the third quarter, mostly due to the midsummer drought that affected our grain harvest in 2024.

The average banana price decreased and traded on R12.45 per kilogram or R224 per 18kg box and is still 11% higher than a year ago. We still expect prices to remain on a relatively higher level until the end of the year due to supply that can remain under pressure, but it can dip in January.

Despite pure petrol cars maintaining the largest individual share, 48.3% of the total 10.7 million new cars registered in the EU for 2023 were hybrid and electric. In 2023, 48.3% of the 10.7 million new cars registered in the EU were hybrid and electric vehicles.

Agri SA and the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa (Agricultural Business Chamber (Agbiz)) have noted the sharp decline in South Africa’s agricultural performance in the third quarter of 2024, with a seasonally adjusted quarter-on-quarter decrease of 28.8%.

South African fruit industry representative bodies the South African Table Grape Industry (SATI), Hortgro, and the Fresh Produce Exporters Forum (FPEF) are aware of the potential strike by dockworkers at USA East Coast ports should unions and employers fail to reach a contract settlement before the 15 January 2025 deadline.

South Africa added 961 MW of private solar PV capacity by October 2024, increasing total solar capacity to 8.97 GW, an 11.9% rise from 2023. The breakdown includes 2.8 GW from public procurement (e.g., REIPPPP) and 6.1 GW from private contributions, highlighting the sector’s resilience despite challenges.

Farmers in Ivory Coast’s cocoa-growing regions raised concerns about insufficient rainfall and high temperatures, which could affect the development of the October-to-March main crop. The country is currently experiencing its dry season, which typically brings scarce rainfall until March.

Quantum Foods has suffered significant losses due to the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), totaling R37 million in 2024, on top of R155 million in 2023. The outbreaks have severely disrupted poultry production, leading to the culling of 90% of the layer breeder flock, reduced production volumes, and increased operational costs.

If you haven't walked in the worn-out boots of a farmer, you can't begin to comprehend the relentless struggle of living with drought.Have you ever invested your life savings into the earth, only to watch it wither away under the scorching sun? Have you endured the agony of waiting for rain that never comes, clinging to useless weather forecasts that promise hope but deliver nothing?

Have you faced the daunting task of appeasing creditors, who demand payment for seeds, fertilizers, and equipment, even as your crops shrivel and die? Do you know the feeling of desperation that grips your heart as you watch your livelihood disintegrate before your eyes? If not, then you can't truly understand the devastating impact of drought on farmers, their families, and their communities.

Drought is more than just a lack of rain; it's a merciless thief that steals away your income, your security, and your sense of purpose.
