Nonprofit shareholder activism group Just Share has called for systemic reforms to tackle gender and racial pay gaps, promote living wages and hold executives accountable for unjustifiable pay practices. While some disparity in pay between executives and entry-level workers is expected, the magnitude of the gap in SA is both economically and morally troubling, the organisation said. According to Just Share, historically disadvantaged groups, such as black people and women, are over-represented in lower-paying roles, indicating the importance of detailed pay gap analyses and Employment Equity (EE) strategies to promote fair hiring and advancement opportunities. Extreme disparities are evident, with CEOs earning on average 597 times the wages of the lowest-paid workers. Consumers and investors play a crucial role in demanding equitable pay policies, with the act introducing binding shareholder votes on remuneration policies.
South Africa’s economy has been much stronger than official data suggests this year due to the miscalculation of agricultural output. This is the finding of a new study which was commissioned by Agri SA, the largest agricultural organisation in the country, and Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa in response to the recent release of shock third-quarter GDP data. The Statistics SA data showed an almost 29% contraction in the agricultural sector, the biggest in at least three decades. This resulted in the national GDP shrinking an unexpected 0.3% from the second to the third quarter. Without agriculture, the SA economy would have grown by 0.4%. The organisation asked the Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy (BFAP), a respected non-profit, to analyse the data from the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) which is used to compile Statistics SA’s GDP data. The BFAP highlighted various areas of concern, including in the calculation of fertiliser and feed costs, and how the agricultural data is adjusted for inflation. An upward revision of approximately R10.8 billion is necessary to correct the real agricultural GDP, the BFAP found.

LW

The surge in succulent poaching began in 2019; a spokesperson for the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) told South African news site GroundUp that police had seized 415,000 succulent plants by the end of 2021.
Rising environmental concerns, stricter regulations on plastic waste, and increasing consumer demand for sustainable products. As awareness about the harmful impact of plastic waste on ecosystems grows, industries and governments are focusing on reducing plasticpollution.'
The Eastern Cape is also making encouraging inroads, boosting new entrant farmers’ output on wool and, soon, hopefully, in other value chains. The efforts for inclusive growth require a collaborative effort between the government and the private sector.
Brazil, already a dominant force in global agriculture as a leading producer and exporter of multiple commodities, is steadfastly working to grow its domestic wheat production and become self-sufficient within the next decade.

A Farmer's Plea: Understanding the Harsh Reality of Drought
If you haven't walked in the worn-out boots of a farmer, you can't begin to comprehend the relentless struggle of living with drought.
Have you ever invested your life savings into the earth, only to watch it wither away under the scorching sun? Have you endured the agony of waiting for rain that never comes, clinging to useless weather forecasts that promise hope but deliver nothing?
Have you faced the daunting task of appeasing creditors, who demand payment for seeds, fertilizers, and equipment, even as your crops shrivel and die? Do you know the feeling of desperation that grips your heart as you watch your livelihood disintegrate before your eyes?
If not, then you can't truly understand the devastating impact of drought on farmers, their families, and their communities.
Drought is more than just a lack of rain; it's a merciless thief that steals away your income, your security, and your sense of purpose. It's a constant reminder that, no matter how hard you work, you're always at the mercy of forces beyond your control.
So, before you offer solutions or sympathies, take a moment to walk in our shoes. Feel the weight of our worries, the depth of our despair, and the resilience of our spirit.
Only then can you begin to understand the true meaning of drought and the unyielding determination of those who face it head-on, season after season.
