Experts warned Tuesday that a looming avian influenza (bird flu) crisis demands urgent action, citing crippling losses in the poultry sector, rising food insecurity and the threat of a pandemic. They also accused the government of dragging its feet on the threat.  The R65bn poultry sector — SA’s second-largest agricultural industry — provides nearly 58,000 jobs along the value chain and is a vital source of affordable protein for millions of households. The country faced its most severe bird flu outbreak in 2023, resulting in the loss of millions of birds and hundreds of jobs. Often dismissed as a disease that affects only birds, avian influenza has shown its ability to jump species, infecting poultry, dogs, cats, cattle and even humans.

The weak performance in agricultural machinery sales in 2024 resulted from various factors. First, South Africa's agricultural sector had higher machinery sales between 2020 and 2023. Improved farmers' incomes supported higher sales due to ample harvest and higher commodity prices. Thus, there was bound to be some correction, leading to a moderation in sales in 2024. Second, after a few good agricultural years, we struggled with a mid-summer drought in the 2023-24 season, weighing on farmers' fortunes and worsening sales performance. Farmers were under financial pressure because of the crop losses. For example, the 2023-24 mid-summer drought has led to a 23% decline in South Africa's summer grains and oilseed production to 15,53 million tonnes. Lastly, the relatively higher interest rates for much of 2024 added to the financial pressures in the sector.

The average national tariff charged for electricity in South Africa has risen by 190% since 2014, with repeated above-inflation increases threatening to make it unaffordable. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) revealed this in its annual report on power generation statistics in South Africa. One of the key themes addressed in the report is the rising price of electricity in South Africa, which has repeatedly increased above inflation.  The CSIR said these repeated increases point out the need for alternative energy sources in South Africa as Eskom’s unreliable coal fleet continues to be a major driver of the rising electricity price. Since 2014, the average electricity tariff in South Africa has risen by 190%. This excludes the proposed tariff increase of 12.74% in 2025.

Too often, younger adults are not taken seriously in the wine world. The narrative seems to imply that younger generations – college graduates and early career professionals – don’t have the refined palate or the interest in fine wine. That is simply not true. While larger wineries have the resources to advertise directly with this demographic, smaller wineries tend to miss this opportunity. READ MORE

Peter Setou, Chief Executive of the Vumelana Advisory Fund, notes that, “while there is consensus on the need to undertake a land reform programme to rectify the racially skewed land ownership patterns resulting from centuries of colonialism and decades of apartheid, there is a sharp divergence of opinion on the appropriate approach to land reform. Of importance is to ensure that the land reform process does not further compromise human rights, but that it reinforces and restores dignity.” READ MORE

In December last year, 11 members of the SA Predator Association (Sapa) filed a notice with the Gauteng Division of the High Court in Pretoria to contest the ban. The Environment Department counter-filed, saying it will oppose the application. Surprisingly, neither Sapa nor the minister, or his Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), disclosed the existence of these legal proceedings at the time. READ MORE

South Africa’s 2024 rhino poaching report shows a decline in incidents, with 420 rhinos killed compared to 499 in 2023, reflecting a positive trend credited to intensified anti-poaching efforts. Of these, 320 were poached on state properties and 100 on private reserves.

Amid rising geoeconomic tensions, South Africa’s (SA) agriculture sector, which hit a record $13.7 billion in exports in 2024 (up 3% year-on-year), should prioritize neutrality and expand trade with diverse regions rather than aligning with specific interests.

If you have funds and are looking to invest in Africa today, consider value addition. That’s where the real money is. What Africa needs at the moment is processing factories that convert raw materials into finished goods. We have enough farms, but raw materials are wasting away due to a lack of proper processing facilities.
