South Africa’s maize exports, typically around 3 million tonnes annually with 18% going to Zimbabwe, must now target Far East markets and southern Africa (excluding Zimbabwe) due to Zimbabwe’s temporary maize import ban starting late August 2025. Agricultural economist Wandile Sihlobo from Agbiz notes that Zimbabwe’s bumper 2024/25 maize harvest of 1.3 million tonnes—over double last season’s drought-hit 800,000 tonnes—prompted the ban to support local farmers. However, this falls short of Zimbabwe’s 2 million tonne annual need, likely requiring 700,000 tonnes in imports later.

The Property Rights Conference, hosted by the Ad Hoc Group for the Protection of Property Rights and supported by TLU SA, was held at TLU SA’s offices in Silverton, Pretoria, under the theme “Property Rights as the Key to Peace.” The event united 53 organizations from diverse sectors to address South Africa’s critical land and property rights issues. Speakers, including Prof. Andre Duvenhage (political climate), Hans-Jurie Moolman (legal context), Prof. William Gumede (expropriation risks), and Joshua Meservey (international warnings on radical land reform), emphasized the foundational role of property rights. Political figures like Willie Aucamp (DA) and Dr. Corné Mulder (VF Plus) reinforced this, while TLU SA’s Henry Geldenhuys thanked attendees for supporting farmers’ efforts to ensure food security.

South Africa's agricultural sector is in its recovery phase, and the second quarter of 2025 figures signal the improvement, albeit mildly. The country's agricultural gross value added expanded by 2.5% quarter-on-quarter (seasonally adjusted) in the second quarter. This follows the 18.6% quarter-on-quarter in the first quarter of the year. The expansion was primarily due to the improved performance of certain field crops and the horticulture subsectors.

Although apartheid ended in 1994, the rooibos tea industry is still dominated by white-owned companies. These companies benefited from years of subsidies and protection by the apartheid government. Rooibos farmers who were classified as “Coloured” (an apartheid-era race term imposed on indigenous Khoi-San and other ethnically diverse oppressed people of colour) were excluded from the industry during this time.  READ MORE

Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.

Ryp is moontlik in die Noord-Kaap (bv. 3°C by Augrabies, -4°C by Zastron), Oos-Kaap, Vrystaat en Wes-Kaap (-2°C by Ceres), maar nie in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng of noordelike Noordwes nie. Vroeë gewasontwikkeling in warmer gebiede verhoog die ryprisiko.La Niña: Die Niño 3.4-gebied is 0,4°C koeler as normaal, wat dui op ’n moontlike swak La Niña teen einde September of begin Oktober, twee maande vroeër as verlede seisoen.

South Africa’s economy is collapsing due to 15 years of mismanagement, with industries like steel and mining shedding jobs—4,000 at ArcelorMittal, 900 at Goodyear, 474 at Ford, and 688 at Assmang’s Beeshoek mine. Unemployment is at 33.9% (Q1 2025), with youth unemployment at 46.1%.

August 2025 tractor sales rose to 700 units, up 22% year-on-year, with year-to-date sales 23% higher than last year. Combine harvester sales remain strong, up nearly 26% year-to-date.

Transnet has reported revenue of R82.7 billion (US$4.4 billion) for the year ended 31 March 2025, a 7.8% increase compared to the previous year. The State-owned rail, port, and pipeline company attributed the growth to improved performance in the rail business under its Recovery Plan.

Global animal agriculture production is projected to grow by 14% over the next decade (2024–2034), driven by a 6% per capita increase in meat, fish, and dairy consumption, according to the FAO and OECD.

Just as the South African agricultural sector is witnessing an annual recovery in its 2025/26 summer crop marketing year (MY), the 2025/26 MY for winter crops is also being touted as a year of recovery. When the 2025/26 MY for winter crops began, uncertainty abounded due to the unfavourable rainfall forecasts and higher input costs, which could have discouraged planting

At the Swartland Show in Moorreesburg, political analyst JP Landman likened the ANC-DA collaboration in South Africa’s government of national unity to the “clumsy fumbling” of young lovers.

It's official—For the first time, Zimbabwean blueberries will be exported to China. The announcement was made after the two countries signed a new protocol agreement in Beijing, following a series of negotiations that began in April 2024. The deal represents an unprecedented opportunity for local producers to access one of the world's fastest-growing blueberry markets.

The South African poultry industry is a crucial sector in the country's economy, worth around R65 billion and employing nearly 58,000 people. It's the second-largest agricultural sector and a significant contributor to food security, with chicken being the most consumed protein source in South Africa.

South Africa's maize industry is export-oriented. Over the past five years, the country has exported roughly 3 million tonnes each year. One of its largest markets is Zimbabwe, typically accounting for about 18% of annual exports. But in the near term, we may see these exports declining. There is a policy change that may lead to such an eventuality.
