Foreign investors have sold a net $10.5 billion (~R204 billion) of South African government bonds this year, adding to $15.9 billion (~R309 billion) of net sales last year. Non-residents held just 26% of government bonds at the end of April, down from a high of 43% in March 2018.Meanwhile, government borrowing costs have surged. The generic 10-year yield climbed to a three-year high of 12.18% on Friday, compared with about 9.05% in February 2018. The rand has lost 39% of its value over the period, the worst performance among major emerging-market currencies after the Turkish lira and Argentine peso. Options traders assign an 85% chance to the rand weakening to below 20 per dollar this year.  South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has lost the confidence of a key constituency.

Karpowership is in the process of submitting applications for environmental approvals to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment for the operation of a 450-megawatt powership in the northeastern port of Richards Bay and a 320-megawatt plant in the western port of Saldanha. A 450-megawatt plant is slated for the Port of Ngqura. Karpowership’s plans, which were initially supposed to be implemented by August last year, have also been slowed by lawsuits and challenges from environmentalists. The terms of the emergency power tender gave Karpowership and other bid winners 20-year supply contracts, attracting the ire of environmentalists who said South Africa would be locked into using a fossil fuel for their duration.

The 2022/2023 season will be remembered for the dry and warmer winter, generally good growing conditions during the vegetative growth phase, good rain shortly before véraison which benefited quality, and a cool and wet ripening period which gave grapes a chance to ripen optimally at a slower rate. Cropland can change significantly over time due to factors like crop rotation or market pressures. Maps that account for in-season changes are thus ideal for our purposes, however these tend to be rarer.  READ MORE

Women in agriculture deserves recognition. These women are in most cases graduated or with some form of post-school tertiary qualification and a leader in hear community, church, at the local school, clinic and plays a role in keeping the daily activities on the farm, running.A Women who forms part of the decision making on the farm, support her husband to adapt to the changes in weather, government rules, managing the finances of the farm as a business.A Women who offers an input before agricultural meetings and conferences. This Women has a direct input in the management of the farm and allows her husband to be a farmer and allows him to farm. South Africa has lost its two main levers of economic development: public investment in physical and social infrastructure (think China, which invests almost 20% of its GDP per year) and a Schumpeter-like creative destruction process through which obsolete firms are replaced by innovative ones (think IBM and Microsoft).

More than half of the world's large lakes and reservoirs have shrunk since the early 1990s, chiefly because of climate change, intensifying concerns about water for agriculture, hydropower and human consumption, a new study has found.

Urea prices slid down this week as producers show willingness to negotiate with buyers as the IFA annual conference kicks off next week. IFA is the primary global fertilizer conference and participants are anticipating a number of deals to be done during the course of this event.

The government is making it harder for the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) to fight inflation due to the effects of ongoing load-shedding on the economy and general economic underperformance. The SARB governor Lesetja Kganyago shared this information during a lecture at the University of Johannesburg last week.

South African cherry orchards are currently in a dormant phase after a very good production season. Retailers are importing limited amounts of cherries. “It was an exceptional season for our fruit after a spring that was warmer and offered more heat units than in the previous season,” says a cherry producer. “Fruit sizing was really good as a result of orchard practices we’d undertaken.”

Retail sales fell for a fourth consecutive quarter in South Africa, signifying the effects of an increasingly difficult economic climate. This is becoming more apparent as household belts are getting uncomfortably tight with scaled-back spending.

Nampo is an agricultural trade show where stakeholders from technology developers to start-ups, agricultural financiers, biotechnology companies, insurance companies, agricultural retailers and others gather to showcase new industry developments and informally interact with clients and potential partners.

The 2023 wine grape harvest is estimated at 1180093 tones, according to the latest harvest estimate by industry body SAWIS (South African Wine Industry Information and Systems) on 12 May 2023. This is 14.2% smaller than the 2022 harvest.

Researchers found that good agricultural and land policies, farmer driven incentives and the involvement of the grassroot players in the coffee value chain has driven the success of coffee in Vietnam. What can African countries pick from this boom and still avoid the environmental pitfalls that came with it in Vietnam?

Global food security is facing increased pressure from a changing climate and a growing population. Certain crops play a major role in feeding the world. Commonly called commodity crops, these include maize, wheat, soybeans, and rice.

These anti-dumping duties fell away in January, but were reintroduced yesterday after the International Trade and Administration Commission (ITAC) found that frozen potato chip imports from these countries were undercutting and harming the local industry by selling the product below their domestic market values or their average cost of production.
