Two-thirds of South Africans don't have "reliable access to enough affordable, nutritious food" - the official definition for food security. It gets worse: of the 63.5%, around 17.5% of households were "severely food insecure" and 5.6% "severely hunger". Hunger, poverty stalk 63.5% of SA households as deadline approaches to end malnutrition by 2030 -Make the sums: of South Africa's population of 62 million (likely more), about 3.5 million people go to bed "severely" hungry. This is an eye-watering statistic and a wake-up call for those of us who have never known food insecurity. We simply cannot talk about the future of South Africa without thinking of ways to alleviate this dire poverty through job creation and social safety nets. Dr Anton Rupert's words, "if your neighbour does not eat, you will not sleep", have never rung truer. The two biggest challenges South Africa's farmers face are rapid population growth (particularly in Africa) and climate change. And they have a plan to tackle both.
In 2023, SA’s total agricultural debt was estimated at more than R200bn, reflecting a 10% jump from the year before and a 76% increase over the past 10 years. Agribusinesses are also increasingly reliant on commercial banks for financing. Farm debt by commercial banks was about R165bn in 2023 — up 14% year on year and 148% from 10 years ago. In contrast, the Land Bank’s agricultural lending in 2023 was down 10% from the year before and 50% from 10 years ago. Deteriorating trading conditions for the Land Bank have resulted in its market share of agricultural debt falling by more than 20 percentage points in the past decade, while commercial banks grew their market share by 30%.

The 2024/25 EU cereal production is estimated at 260.9 million tonnes, around 7% below the 5-year average, which represents the lowest production in the last decade. This is caused by unfavourable weather conditions affecting yields and, in part, by a reduction in cultivated area due to, among other things, excessive rain disrupting planting. The most affected crops are soft wheat and maize, while oats, barley and durum wheat production increases. READ MORE
South Africa is not an insignificant player in global agriculture. The country ranked 32nd among the world's top agricultural exporters in 2023 and the only African country in the top 40, according to data from Trade Map (exports amounted to US$13,2 billion in 2023). This was made possible by a range of trading agreements South Africa secured over the past decades, the most important being with some African, European, American, and Asian countries. The African continent and Europe now account for about two-thirds of South Africa's agricultural exports. READ MORE
There is a 60% chance of La Niña weather conditions emerging in September-November and they are expected to persist through January-March 2025, a U.S. government forecaster said on Thursday.La Niña, a climatic phenomenon characterized by cooler-than-average ocean temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, is associated with both floods and droughts affecting global agriculture, and higher Caribbean hurricane activity.
Westfalia Fruit’s first export of avocados from South Africa to China arrived in Shanghai last week. The first container exported by the multinational supplier arrived on October 8, when Shanghai customs conducted an inspection, the company announced in a statement.
Looking into a cab of a tractor today is almost looking at a control panel of a plane. Gone are yesterday’s tractors where we thought a cab and a radio was comfort. Now there are tractors that can drive themselves and be controlled by a mobile phone. Now that is serious technology.
A dualistic structure characterizes the South African agricultural sector—on one end, a well-established commercial farming sector, and on the other, an underdeveloped small-scale sector. The small-scale sector constitutes 250,000 smallholder farmers and 1.5 million subsistence farmers .
In recent years, the global orange sector has witnessed a concerning decline in sales, a trend that persists despite the well-established health benefits of oranges. While there has been considerable innovation in the mandarin subsector of citrus, consumers have become increasingly indifferent to the traditional offerings of the orange category.
On October 10th, 2024, an initial shipment of 25 tons of potatoes from the Kurdistan Region is scheduled for export to South Africa through the Ibrahim Khalil's International Border Crossing Gate, as part of a broader agreement to export a total of 100 tons in several phases.
After a challenging 2024 season characterised by extreme weather conditions such as floods, frost, and strong winds, South African wine producers are optimistic about the 2025 harvest. Most wine regions have experienced above-average winter rainfall, with improved chill unit accumulation and minimal frost damage, leaving producers hopeful about the new season.

Two micro-organisms – a bacterium and an algae – can be used together to convert carbon dioxide and methane into a protein-rich biomass. The discovery has prompted the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (MPIs) to support Upflow and partners to progress the research.
Landbouweekblad se Vee-akademie word vandag by Nampopark in Bothaville gehou.
