The Middle East region is increasingly important in the South African agricultural trade. For example, in 2023, Asia and the Middle East accounted for 28% of South Africa's agricultural exports, the second largest region. South Africa primarily exports citrus, apples and pears, beef, fresh berries, grapes, and sheep and goat meat to the Middle East. These industries have a potential for growth in South Africa and, therefore, prospects of large volumes for exports to the Middle East.
South Africa has regained access to the Kingdom of Thailand for the export of fresh apples, a market that had been closed for 16 years due to changes in import requirements. The announcement was made by the Department of Agriculture following the publication of the import conditions on 18 December 2024. Apples are a key export product for South Africa, contributing significantly to foreign exchange and employment. According to Hortgro, the South African apple industry has seen a 40% increase in exports over the past decade, with the Far East and Asia accounting for about 35% of apple exports. Nearly half of the apples produced in South Africa are exported.

In the past, EU officials have resisted the pressure to impose tariffs, preferring instead to maintain a relatively open market approach. Southern Africa is facing a significant hunger crisis as unpredictable rainfall patterns, exacerbated by climate change, threaten the region's agricultural output. The El Niño weather phenomenon has led to prolonged dry spells and heatwaves, severely impacting staple crops like maize and soybeans.
The 2024 citrus export campaign from the southern hemisphere did not align with previous growth trends, largely due to South Africa's performance. As the primary exporter, contributing two-thirds of the total citrus exports (2.23 million tons), South Africa faced several challenges.
Donald Trump's threat to cut off funding to South Africa because of the Expropriation Act, which Cyril Ramaphosa signed into law last week, could have significant implications for the nation's economic growth.
According to the latest Income and Expenditure Survey of Households 2022/2023 by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), South African households allocate approximately R76 out of every R100 to essential living expenses. These include housing, water, electricity, gas, food, transportation, and insurance.
Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson has assured that no land is being confiscated in South Africa and that land grabs will not be permitted. His statement comes in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's claim that certain groups in South Africa are being mistreated due to the recently enacted Expropriation Act.
