Dit skep praktiese uitdagings, soos by onwettige betogings, waar voorafbeplanning onmoontlik is.

South Africa’s agricultural sector, a key export driver with a record US$13.7 billion in 2024, thrives on diverse markets—nearly half to Africa, with significant shares to the EU, Middle East, Asia, and the UK. Amid global geoeconomic tensions, neutrality and expanded trade relations are recommended over regional alignment. While the EU market, despite citrus-related frictions, offers limited growth and potential non-tariff barriers, it remains vital to maintain for current access. The Middle East, unsaturated and lacking competing local producers, holds untapped potential—South Africa captures just 1-2% of Saudi Arabia’s, UAE’s, and Qatar’s US$25 billion, US$22 billion, and US$4 billion agricultural imports, respectively, lagging behind dominant suppliers like India and Brazil.

Outstanding articles of the week. Summary of some news Headlines in the Farming and Agriculture media.

First is a lack of coherence between national policies and local realities. The objectives of governments and funders don’t always align with the livelihood goals of irrigators. Governments strive for food security and large donors tend to finance and develop large irrigation projects. READ MORE

Since the U.S. authorities announced import tariffs on an unprecedented scale against several countries, the confusion about how practically they will apply lingers. We still have insufficient details regarding tariff levels by product as the U.S. authorities have not provided much official guidance. This dearth of detail creates uncertainty and limits the ability of the South African authorities to engage productively with their U.S. counterparts. READ MORE

Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.

15 Best South Africa News Podcasts

AGRI NEWS NET on NUMBER 7 for the month of March  2025

The numbers tell the story: Audiocast listenership is climbing, and agriculture is no exception. By some estimates, over 100 million people in the U.S. alone are tuning into podcasts, with farmers and ranchers making up a dedicated slice of that pie. Successful ag-focused shows are racking up thousands of downloads per episode, and some are even attracting sponsors eager to reach this engaged audience.

This week, South African citrus growers will begin packing fruit for the US market, just as a new 30% tariff on South African exports to the US takes effect on April 9, 2025. This tariff, significantly higher than the 10% baseline applied to competitors in South America, threatens the competitiveness of South African citrus, adding $4.25 per carton.

Justin Chadwick, CEO of the Citrus Growers Association (CGA) of South Africa for 25 years, is set to retire at the end of March 2025. Starting as the sole employee in a newly deregulated and fragmented citrus industry, he built the CGA into a robust organization with subsidiaries like the Citrus Academy and hundreds of employees.

China's Soybean Imports Expected to Decline in 2025 -After reaching a record 105.03M tons in 2024, China's soybean imports are projected to drop slightly in 2025 (-3.84% YoY). Key factors: rising global prices, stable hog farming stocks, and stronger domestic soybean production. With rising import costs and evolving demand dynamics, China’s soybean market is set for a shift.
