South Africa's agriculture sector is in recovery mode, although the recovery is uneven, as some subsectors, mainly livestock, are facing challenges that will become apparent later in the year. The data released this morning by Statistics South Africa shows that South Africa's agricultural gross value added expanded by 15,8% quarter-on-quarter (seasonally adjusted) in the first quarter of 2025. This expansion is primarily due to the improved performance of certain field crops and the horticulture subsectors. Overall, the South African economy grew by 0,1% quarter-on-quarter (seasonally adjusted) in the first quarter of 2025. The country remains in a low-growth trap.

The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development banned poultry imports from Brazil earlier this month due to a highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) outbreak in Rio Grande do Sul. Brazil’s Role: Brazil, the world’s top poultry exporter, is South Africa’s main supplier of mechanically deboned meat (MDM), chicken offal, and affordable cuts, critical for low-income households. Economic Impact: South Africa’s R65 billion poultry sector, the second-largest in agriculture, supports nearly 58,000 jobs and provides affordable protein to millions. AMIE’s Warning: The Association of Meat Importers and Exporters (AMIE) warns of a food and economic crisis, citing local producers’ inability to meet demand for offal (feet, gizzards, skins) and MDM. Prices have surged, with MDM jumping from R13/kg to R31/kg and offal seeing double-digit increases. AMIE notes Brazilian MDM supports over 400 million monthly meals. Shortfalls: Even with local producers adding 4 million birds monthly, AMIE projects shortages: 3,773 tonnes of chicken feet, 1,315 tonnes of gizzards, and 287 tonnes of livers, with no significant local MDM production.

South African farmers have long been the backbone of our economy, our food security, and our rural communities. Yet, despite their importance, they are too often met with poor service delivery, incompetence, and a lack of respect from government institutions and service providers. It’s time to say: enough is enough. READ MORE

Regarding oilseeds, the soybean harvest is estimated at 2.33 million tonnes, unchanged from April 2025 but still up 26% year-over-year. The annual uptick is primarily due to improved yields recovering from last year's drought. Sunflower seeds are down 2.02% from April, but still up 15% from the previous season and are estimated at 727,800 tonnes. READ MORE

Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.

South Africa's agriculture sector, a focus ahead of this week’s Q1 2025 GDP data release, struggled in 2024 due to a mid-summer drought, delayed harvests, and animal diseases, dragging down the economy. This year, however, the outlook is more positive, driven by.

Across South Africa's summer grain and oilseed growing regions, farmers and farm workers are hard at work harvesting. The process is in full swing in oilseeds – mainly soybeans and sunflower seeds – where over half of the expected harvest has already been delivered to commercial silos.

The effect of the fuel levy increase on food prices — a major concern of those opposed to the hike — will be mitigated by the diesel refund scheme for key primary sectors such as agriculture, the Treasury says. Government subsidies for public transport will also assist the poor.

Land reform in South Africa, though urgent, has been undermined by corruption and mismanagement, particularly in institutions like the Land Bank. Once a key supporter of emerging farmers, the Land Bank was exploited by politically connected individuals under the ANC-led government, diverting billions meant for land redistribution and farmer support.

Zimbabwe, a persistent food insecurity hotspot in Southern Africa, especially during droughts, relies heavily on aid from organizations like the World Food Programme (WFP). However, reduced U.S. funding to USAID has weakened the WFP, putting Zimbabwe and similar nations at risk. While many African countries import grain during droughts, often via the WFP, the focus is shifting to domestic solutions.

Summary of South Africa's Agricultural Sector in Q1 2025:
  • Growth: Agricultural gross value added rose by 15.8% quarter-on-quarter (seasonally adjusted) in Q1 2025, driven by strong performance in field crops and horticulture.
  • Subsector Highlights:
    1. Summer Grains & Oilseeds: Forecast at 17.98 million tonnes, up 16% from the 2023-24 drought season, due to favorable rains and planting.
    2. Sugar: 2024-25 production expected to increase 7% year-on-year to 2.09 million tonnes, aided by good weather and irrigation.
    3. Wine Grapes: 2025 harvest projected at 1.244 million tonnes, an 11% recovery from 2024, per SA Wine and Vinpro.
    4. Table Grapes: 2024-25 harvest inspected at 78.9 million cartons, up 4% year-on-year.
    5. Citrus, Fruits, Vegetables: Encouraging production data reported.
    6. Poultry: Recovery supported by moderating maize and soybean prices.
  • Challenges: Livestock sector faces setbacks from a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak, leading to export bans on beef, impacting a significant portion of agricultural value.
  • Outlook: Despite quarterly volatility, annual agricultural recovery is expected in 2025, rebounding from -8.7% in 2024 and -4.6% in 2023, driven by base effects and strong field crops, horticulture, and poultry. However, uneven recovery is anticipated due to livestock challenges.
  • Broader Economy: South Africa’s economy grew by 0.1% quarter-on-quarter (seasonally adjusted) in Q1 2025, remaining in a low-growth trap.

In a recent National Assembly debate, the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) likened genocide to a brewing storm, emphasizing that warning signs are already visible and must be taken seriously. Drawing on Genocide Watch's 10 stages of genocide, they highlighted that white farmers in South Africa are at stage six—polarisation—marked by polarizing propaganda, targeted killings, disarmament of the target group, and laws undermining self-defense. Key examples include the 2003 abolition of rural safety commandos and recent draft firearm regulations for private security, which weaken farmers' protection. The VF Plus noted that farm murders underscore the reality of threats, regardless of debates over chants like “Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer.” They expressed concern over the President’s exclusionary “our people” rhetoric in land reform discussions, which fuels division. Urging proactive measures, the VF Plus stressed the need to address these signs now, rather than waiting for escalation to extermination, to prevent a potential crisis.
