According to Statistics South Africa’s Food Security Report (February 2025, based on General Household Survey data for 2019, 2022, and 2023), food insecurity in South Africa has worsened. Moderate to severe food insecurity rose from 15.8% in 2019 to 19.7% in 2023, with severe cases increasing from 6.4% to 8.0%. The core issue is not a lack of nutritious food or high prices but limited access due to income poverty, particularly in households without regular income.
The spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in 2025 across five South African provinces (KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West, Free State) is jeopardizing the beef industry, disrupting supply chains and export markets just before the festive season's peak demand for beef. New cases at feedlots in Gauteng and Free State, with a potential case under investigation, exacerbate the crisis, which began in March and spread beyond KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape by August. The Department of Agriculture is responding with imported vaccines from Botswana and plans for local vaccine production.
Outstanding articles of the week. Summary of some news Headlines in the Farming and Agriculture media.
On September 30, the SAWS stated that the latest forecasts "indicate that we are moving towards at least a weak La Niña event during the coming summer season. As the period of uncertainty for ENSO during winter and early spring draws to an end, the predictions become more accurate. There are still some predictions that remain neutral. However, a La Niña State is more likely and gaining confidence as we near the summer seasons". READ MORE

Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.

The agricultural sector thrives on the expertise and resilience of farmers who work the land daily, yet many farming and agriculture awards are judged by panels dominated by corporate workers and bureaucrats. This disconnect raises concerns about the fairness and relevance of such evaluations.Farmers with hands-on experience understand the challenges of soil management, weather uncertainties, and market fluctuations. Their practical knowledge ensures a grounded perspective when assessing innovation, sustainability, or productivity in farming. In contrast, judges with corporate or administrative backgrounds—often labeled as "pen pushers"—may prioritize metrics like financial reports or polished presentations over real-world impact. While corporate expertise can offer valuable insights into business scalability or policy, it often lacks the depth of lived experience. A farmer-led judging panel, or at least one balanced with seasoned practitioners, would better recognize the ingenuity and grit required to succeed in agriculture. This shift could also inspire trust among participants, ensuring awards reflect the realities of farming rather than corporate ideals.Including real farmers as judges isn’t just fair—it’s essential for celebrating authentic contributions to agriculture. Awards should honor those who feed the world, judged by those who know the soil best.
