China will impose an additional 55% tariff on beef imports from countries such as Brazil, Australia, and the United States starting 1 January 2026, whenever annual quotas are exceeded. The measure will apply for three years (until 31 December 2028) and is classified as “safeguard measures” to temporarily protect the domestic industry from oversupply and low prices. For 2026, Brazil is allocated a quota of 1.1 million tonnes, Argentina approximately half of that, Australia 200,000 tonnes, and the United States 164,000 tonnes. Imports exceeding these quotas will be subject to the 55% additional duty.South African beef farmers are increasingly reporting sudden deaths of suckling calves due to tiger heart syndrome — a serious complication of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in calves under three months old. The virus, now endemic in most provinces, often shows few classic symptoms (such as heavy salivation, mouth lesions, or lameness), but attacks the heart muscle and lungs, leading to striped lesions on the heart and high mortality rates. The South African Braai Index for late 2025 brings some relief: the cost of a typical braai basket dropped by 1.6% month-on-month in December, making braais slightly more affordable. However, it remains 0.7% higher than the same time last year, well below headline food inflation (which rose to 4.4% in November). Meat prices remain the main pressure point (beef +21%, Sausage +11%) due to FMD, while vegetable prices (especially potatoes and onions) help balance the basket.China’s grain production increased by 1.2% year-on-year in 2025 to a record 714.9 million tonnes, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. President Xi Jinping announced a strict “no relaxation” approach at the Central Rural Work Conference to further expand production, targeting an additional 50 million tonnes of capacity by 2030 through better land, seeds, machinery, and farming techniques.

Farming isn’t your typical 9-to-5 gig. It’s a lifestyle that demands early mornings, late nights, and plenty of time operating machinery or walking the land. That’s where Audiocast shine. They’re hands-free, portable, and don’t care if you’re covered in dirt or steering through a muddy field. Unlike a book or a video, a Audiocast doesn’t ask you to stop what you’re doing—it joins you in the cab, the shed, or wherever the day takes you. And farmers are listening. Surveys suggest that a significant chunk of the agricultural community—some estimates say over a third—tune into ag-related podcasts regularly. Whether it’s catching up on market trends, learning about the latest in soil health, or just hearing a good story from another grower, these audio shows have become a go-to resource.
