NEWS- NUUS
Southern Africa has experienced agricultural trade friction in the past few years since Namibia and Botswana banned the import of South African vegetables and citrus. Simply put, the rationale of both Namibia and Botswana was that the import ban ensures their domestic producers are not exposed to South African competition, thus giving them space to rebuild for self-sufficiency. A new administration in Botswana under President Duma Boko brings the opportunity to reverse the prohibitions of the previous administration and encourage stronger regional agricultural production and trade. The priority should be to ensure that the people of Botswana can access high-quality agricultural and food products.
World Animal Protection is deeply concerned by the announcement that JBS, one of the world’s largest food companies, is expanding into Nigeria with a $2.5 billion investment plan. While JBS touts this move as an effort to boost local food security and develop sustainable production chains, we must carefully consider the animal welfare and environmental implications of this expansion and the sustainability of the whole project. Factory farming, which JBS is known for, has been linked to a myriad of issues. The mass production of poultry, beef, and pork often involves close confinement of animals in deplorable conditions, leading to significant suffering. As JBS builds six new factories in Nigeria, it raises concerns about the welfare of millions of animals that will inevitably be subjected to factory farm conditions, where their fundamental needs for space, movement, and social interaction are ignored in favour of business-oriented production. Africa, including Nigeria, faces serious climate change challenges. Introducing JBS’s industrial animal agriculture model—known for its high carbon footprint—can worsen the country’s climate crisis and undermine its commitment to the Paris Agreement and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

First, the International Energy Agency (IEA) recently published its landmark World Energy Outlook 2024 report. It suggests that energy demand for data centres and AI will still be pretty small for the next five years at least. I read it as them saying: “Everyone just needs to chill out a bit.” But in a more diplomatic way. READ MORE

We are ending this year with food price inflation — the rate at which prices are increasing — cooling off to levels we have not seen in years. For example, having stabilised at 4,1% in September 2024, consumer food price inflation slowed notably to 2,8% in October.
US president-elect Donald Trump has chosen Brooke Rollins, president of the America First Policy Institute, to be agriculture secretary.“As our next secretary of agriculture, Brooke will spearhead the effort to protect American farmers, who are truly the backbone of our country,” Trump said in a statement.
