Weeklikse Afrikaanse Landbou Nuusoorsig - Die Afrikaanse Nuus is die afgelope paar dae op AGRI NEWS NET geplaas, saam met nog ander artikels.
The multiple challenges facing South African farmers rarely come to mind for those of us who don’t earn a living from growing crops and rearing farm animals. But when supermarkets start to run out of eggs the country takes notice. The current outbreak of bird flu in many parts of the country could well be the worst to hit the local poultry industry. Large-scale poultry producers are already reporting losses running into hundreds of millions of rand and more than a quarter of broiler breeder hens that lay eggs to produce chickens for meat production have died or been culled. But these outbreaks of bird flu are to an extent a symptom of a much larger problem. Recent outbreaks of African swine fever and foot-and-mouth disease have been equally devastating for pig, sheep and livestock farmers. The spread and poor management of these diseases are some of the effects of an animal health system that is threatening to collapse.
The government has given the go-ahead for French energy company TotalEnergies to drill offshore for gas and oil, after rejecting an appeal from more than a dozen individuals and lobby groups who intend challenging the decision. The appeal to stop TotalEnergies from drilling in Block 5/6/7 off the Cape coast was the latest in a series of actions seeking to halt energy companies exploring for new offshore discoveries that could damage the environment. It sought to persuade forestry, fisheries & the environment minister Barbara Creecy to set aside the environmental authorisation granted to the energy company by the department of mineral resources & energy in April, on grounds ranging from marine noise and oil spills to climate change and insufficient public consultation.
Schmidt Agricola is a large agricultural company producing soya beans, maize and cotton in Bahia, Brazil, one of the country's new-frontier agricultural areas fit for large-scale, hi-tech farming. It recently added a new crop to its fields: cocoa. Production of the chocolate-making ingredient is expanding outside the main growing area in West Africa as farmers in places such Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia see potential profit in the crop. Brazil’s government projects output could grow to 300,000 tonnes by 2025 and to 400,000 tonnes by 2030, from about 200,000 tonnes now, which would turn the country from a net importer to a regular exporter of the commodity. In Ecuador, annual production has risen to 400,000-430,000 tonnes in 2022-23 (October-September) from 287,000 tonnes five years ago, according to estimates by the International Cocoa Organisation (ICCO) and Ecuador’s exporting group Anecacao. Ecuador has become the third largest global grower, behind Ghana which produces about 750,000 tonnes. The top grower is Ivory Coast with 2.2-million tonnes.
While countries in the Northern Hemisphere, as well as SA, may be experiencing bumper wheat and maize seasons, analysts warn that local consumers shouldn't necessarily expect large falls in the prices of staples like bread. But while there may not be any major relief in sight, consumers shouldn't expect significant price hikes, for now at least. South African farmers expect to harvest 6% more maize in the 2022/2023 season compared with the previous season, according to the government's crop estimates committee (CEC), which said last week that the latest summer crop forecast estimates the 2023 harvest at 16.4 million tons. SA's 2023 wheat output forecast was also 2.13 million tons versus 2.11 million tons in 2022, The price of wheat was headed for the worst run of quarterly losses in 14 years, thanks to bumper harvests offsetting tensions stemming from the collapse of a grain deal between Ukraine and Russia.
Effects of climate change that were once subtle and suspect to most who were not specialists are becoming profoundly obvious. Population growth has exploded, and municipalities throughout the nation are vying with agriculture for precious natural resources by drying up farms for urban water needs, using farmed lands for housing developments, decreasing the available soil and vegetation that can slow the carbon dioxide release into the atmosphere by paving surfaces and removing trees, and degrading air quality by man-made activities. On the positive side, the Western Cape dams are generally full. The dam improvement will significantly help irrigate the horticulture fields in the coming months. Still, the immediate need for farmers and farming towns is assistance fixing the infrastructure so that commercial activities can resume. The road networks, storage facilities and electricity supplies are probably the most immediate areas to prioritize. READ MORE
