The South African Poultry Association (SAPA) says its members will also be reducing exports of table eggs, which will be diverted to local supermarkets and restaurants as the country grapples with its worst-ever bird flu outbreak. In addition, all local eggs earmarked for processing to create liquid egg products, often used in industrial baking, will be held back for use as table eggs. SAPA is also planning to rebuild poultry flocks destroyed by the disease and will be fast-tracking the import of fertile hatchery eggs. Balane said it would take up to 16 to 18 months for the industry to make up for the 30% of production it has effectively lost. Last week, SAPA estimated that the industry had culled in excess of 5 million commercial layer birds and 2.5 million breeder birds.
The world confronts the weakest medium-term growth outlook in three decades amid high debt levels, fragmented trade, and the prospect of higher-for-longer interest rates. In this environment, the IMF is redoubling its efforts to promote stability and growth. All countries grapple with uncertainty from shocks related to the pandemic, war in Ukraine, and transformational challenges such as climate change and digitalization. Several emerging market and developing countries have shown remarkable resilience. But many—especially low-income countries—are increasingly vulnerable amid tighter financial conditions, limited policy room for maneuver, and dwindling buffers. These countries also face a funding squeeze, heightened food insecurity, and a slower convergence toward higher living standards. High debt burdens and a sharp increase in debt servicing costs—exceeding 40 percent of revenues in several highly indebted countries—leave little space for social spending and growth-enhancing investment. This adversely impacts debt sustainability and social stability.
READ MORE
By 2045, the destruction will be complete unless we act now to stop the inevitable annihilation of nature and life on Earth. Let’s put things into perspective, in comparison to protecting nature, carbon mitigation, windmills and electric cars are almost a joke. We will have lost 80%-90% of all plankton by 2045, and the oceans will become more acidic, with a pH of 7.95. We will then lose all remaining whales, seals, birds, and fish, as well as a food supply for 2 billion people. Life on Earth will change; indeed, life on Earth may become impossible. READ MORE
The ongoing load shedding and power disruptions have put tremendous pressure and additional costs on the industry, which makes producing poultry products extremely expensive. One company (Astral Foods) has spent an additional R919 million as a result of load shedding alone. This has obviously had a significant impact on the profitability and sustainability of the company.
Now to make matters worse – the local poultry industry has been hit with a major avian influenza epidemic. READ MORE
Climate change is making farming increasingly complex, as is a growing body of international laws and regulations governing the export of farm produce. Apart from allowing farmers to move away from the obvious risks in monoculture – soil degradation, pest infestations, biodiversity loss, and more – agritourism can help them broaden their revenue streams and improve their financial stability.By expanding their core business to include agritourism, farmers can put more money in their bank accounts and create new agritourism roles. This will increase job opportunities, which are sorely needed in South Africa - plagued as it is by high unemployment. ANDRIES WIESE - ( agrinewsnet.co.za)

Thoko Didiza, Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, said her department will be more efficient at issuing import permits for egg products as the highly contagious avian influenza causes egg shortages in northern South Africa.

Unless South Africa is prepared to accept a future where chicken become a luxury foodstuff, it cannot be business as usual in the face of the unprecedented avian flu (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, HPAI) that is currently decimating our poultry industry.
The final price increases for petrol and diesel in October are higher than expected last week. The diesel price has increased by R1,96/litre and petrol will be between R1,08 and R1,14 more expensive.
FirstRand released its annual remuneration report for 2023 – revealing how much the group’s top execs earned over the last financial year, which includes the CEOs of FirstRand, FNB, and RMB. For the year ending June 2023, FirstRand reported a 12% growth in headline earnings to R36.7 billion, with net asset value up 10% to R180.7 billion.
