SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA, U.S. — S&W Seed Co. and AGT Foods Africa Pty Ltd. are partnering to form a new joint venture in South Africa that will produce and commercialize seed products in Africa. The new company will be called SeedVision SA Pty Ltd., and will be 50.1% owned by S&W and 49.9% owned by AGT Foods Africa.

South Africa will have almost doubled its avocado exports compared to last season by the time the 2018 export harvest comes to an end in October.

It has also become clear that the days of the South African export crop varying between 11m and 14m cartons is over. In future the volume harvested in 2018 could become the norm, with future growth expected.

Regular readers of this blog might remember that I’ve recently discussed the uncertainty caused by the delays in tariff gazetting in the South African wheat market. Coincidentally, after publishing that post on August 17, the tariff swiftly published on the government gazette four days after.  

South Africa is a net importer of wheat, which means that developments in the global environment tend to influence the local market. Yesterday’s trade session was no different, the SAFEX wheat spot price recorded good gains in line with the Chicago wheat prices, closing at R4 393 per tonne.
