The EU regained its position as South Africa’s second-largest agricultural market, overtaking Asia, with a share of 22%. Grapes, apricots, peaches, cherries, plums, wine, apples and pears, dates, figs, avocados, guavas, mangos, wool and fruit juices were the primary products exported to the EU in the first quarter. Asia and the Middle East as a collective were the third-largest agricultural markets for South Africa, accounting for 19% of exports. The main products were apples and pears, grapes, wool, sugar, beef, citrus, apricots, cherries and peaches, mutton and lamb, and soya beans. Accounting for both exports and the imports, South Africa’s agriculture recorded a trade surplus of $1,4bn in the first quarter, up 20% from the first quarter of 2023. The sharp rise resulted mainly from imports falling, while exports lifted slightly.

The agricultural organisation TLU SA takes note of the appointment of the current Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, as acting Minister of Agriculture. This move immediately raises the question of whether this appointment forecasts a permanent position and whether it was truly necessary to make this decision just days before a new cabinet is appointed. The swift appointment suggests that Mchunu might receive this portfolio in the new cabinet. Surely, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture could have taken the reins in these few days, alongside a Director-General of Agriculture dedicated to serving the country's agricultural interests. TLU SA believes it is essential to consider Mchunu's contributions to the Department of Water and Sanitation, where there are undeniable issues with malfunctioning systems.

Young people interested in agripreneurship need access to financial and physical resources and comprehensive training programmes. Collaboration between tertiary institutions, the government, and the private sector is essential in providing the necessary skills and knowledge to foster successful agripreneurs. By offering joint training initiatives and resources, we can equip aspiring young farmers and entrepreneurs with the tools they need to thrive in the sector.  Strengthening the role of agricultural associations is critical to bridging the gap between the sector and educational institutions. These organisations can serve as valuable platforms for networking, connecting students with mentors, and facilitating internship opportunities.

A decade ago, carbon pricing policies covered only 7% of global emissions. It is already a challenge to find white maize in the world market regardless of whether it is GMO or GMO-free, as the major producers are the Southern African region (South Africa specifically) and Mexico. Most of the world's maize is yellow maize for animal feed. The drought has hit the entire Southern Africa region. The Southern Africa region's primary maize producer, South Africa, saw its harvest fall by 19% year-on-year to 13,3 million tonnes in the 2023/24 season. Still, South Africa could have about 1,5 million tonnes for the export markets. This is both white and yellow maize.  READ MORE

World Animal Protection welcomes the G7 Summit Presidency’s announcement to prioritize food security and sustainable food systems in Africa through the Apulia Food Systems Initiative. This commendable step presents an opportunity, to extend support to smallholder farmers, who are the backbone of agriculture across the continent.

However, recent trends indicate a growing lack of interest among young people in pursuing agricultural careers. One would think given the high unemployment among youth — 45.5% according to the latest statistics released by Stats SA — they would be eager to work in the sector. Yet, they often view the sector as a last resort without alternative opportunities.

The collaboration between Transnet, organised business and agriculture sector stakeholders to improve efficiency at South African ports must go on. Efficient logistics are the lifeblood of SA agriculture and other exporting sectors of the economy.

South African pear exports to India have been so successful that there are fears that different cultivars may start competing one another in this lucrative market.

The World Bank Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), which rated South Africa’s port performance as amongst the world’s worst, excessively penalised South African ports based on time spent at anchor.

Cycling water into cooling clouds and cooling rain is the function of the opposing teams of Organic Aerosols vs. Inorganic Aerosols. Organic aerosols cloud seed at moderate temperatures, while Inorganic Aerosols suppress rain and cloud formation until the extremes lead to extreme climate events. While CO2 keeps us busy, uncondensed water vapor is wreaking havoc.

Agricultural production is tough and requires producers to be resilient and determined. This summer season, the agricultural sector and specifically grain producers faced substantial uncertainty due to the El Niño drought ravaging especially the west.

Research published by an international team reveals that the speed at which a subtype of avian influenza can spread in Asia’s live bird markets is high. Based on actual data, the scientists conclude that prevention, including vaccination of birds destined for sale at wet market, is needed.

The ‘special tax’ that could cut petrol prices to under R15 a litre in South Africa The South African government could reduce petrol prices by imposing a special tax on monopoly companies—among other things—to make up the fuel levy shortfall, which could lead to a price reduction of around 35% per litre, if not more.
