The 2024 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA) revealed global fisheries and aquaculture production in 2022 surged to 223.2 million tonnes, a 4.4% increase from the year 2020. Production comprised 185.4 million tonnes of aquatic animals and 37.8 million tonnes of algae. Record production of aquatic foods underscores the sector's potential to address food insecurity and malnutrition. In 2021, global apparent consumption of aquatic animal foods reached 162.5 million tonnes, growing at nearly twice the rate of the world population since 1961. Global per capita annual consumption increased from 9.1 kg in 1961 to 20.7 kg in 2022.

Current ivory prices are about $400/kg in illicit markets in the East and averaging about $92/kg across Africa (except for Nigeria, which has now become the continent’s major export hub). Assuming away the problem of who exactly would buy this stockpile, these countries would need to sell about 10,000 tonnes (at $100/kg) to get $1bn. If we assume that Zimbabwe, SA, Namibia, Angola, Botswana and Zambia have about 500 tonnes of legally stockpiled ivory between them, they could earn $50m. This is 5% of the $1bn illusion. It would be difficult to imagine anyone buying the ivory. But even if they didn’t get it right, the risks to elephants from the bombastic rhetoric could be substantial.

Importantly, South Africa's agricultural gross value added grew by 13.5% quarter-on-quarter (seasonally adjusted) in the first quarter of 2024. This improvement is based on the robust production conditions of various horticulture products, the livestock and poultry industry recovery after a few challenging months of animal diseases that weighed on production, and the base effects. Admittedly, the production conditions in some livestock and poultry businesses may not be fully back to their normal levels, but the general subsector performance is on a recovery path.

The mid-summer drought, which has led to a 21% year-on-year decline in South Africa's summer grains and oilseed production to an expected harvest of 15,9 million tonnes in the 2023/24 season, will likely reflect on the second and third quarter figures of the sector performance. READ MORE

Despite Africa accounting for less than 4% of all global greenhouse gas emissions, many of its countries face significant threats from climate change, including increased droughts, floods, heat waves and potential crop failures. READ MORE

Zambia’s maize production in the 2023/24 season is down by more than 50% to an estimated harvest of 1.6 million tonnes because of the intense heatwave and mid-summer drought. The country must now import about a million tonnes of maize to meet its domestic annual needs.  READ MORE

The supply of South African pears shipping into Canada is good this season. "Overall this year, our green pear supply–the Bartletts–is a little bit more than last year. Forelles are also a little bit higher than last year while Boscs are down from last year. Though as a company, we probably have the same volume of pears as we did last year," says Peter Martino of FPD East Inc

In Kumi and Bukedea, Uganda, farmers are experiencing difficulties with surplus cassava, highlighted by the abundance of dried cassava at the Bukedea weekly flea market. This situation underscores the broader issue of insufficient agro-processing capabilities, which prevents local farmers from accessing broader markets and achieving better prices for their produce.
