Despite its abundant fertile land, Africa is importing food. In 2021 alone the continent received more than R68bn in farm products from international sources. Though one could rationalise these imports by pointing to increased urbanisation and the continent’s rapidly growing cities, the fact remains that Africa has 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land and the unrealised capacity to become a global agricultural powerhouse.

The past three years have been challenging for South Africa’s livestock and poultry industry because of the spread of animal diseases. We’ve had outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in cattle, African swine fever in pigs, and avian influenza in poultry. While animal disease outbreaks are not unique to South Africa and are common across the world, South Africa’s challenges have intensified in the recent past. The cost of diseases in the livestock industry is felt through the loss of livestock and reduced exports to global markets in times of outbreaks. However, the country is now taking significant steps to control the spread of diseases.

Outstanding articles of the week. Summary of some news Headlines in the Farming and Agriculture media.

The latest South African Grain and Oilseeds Supply and Demand Estimates Committee estimates suggest that 2024-25 wheat imports may fall 7% to 1,80 million tonnes. This will be closely aligned with a five-year average of wheat imports to South Africa. The major boost is the higher opening stocks, supplemented by the ample imports in the past season. In a way, one could argue that South African importers took advantage of global wheat imports' relatively better prices in the past few months to build supplies for this new season. RREAD MORE

Australian production for the 2024/25 season is expected to rise to 47.05m tonnes, a marginal increase of 1.1% or 0.5m tonnes YOY. The positive start and good rainfall during the growing season in Queensland, northern New South Wales, and some areas in Western Australia largely counterbalanced shortfalls in Victoria and South Australia’s precipitation. Global warming affects rainfall. When air is warmer it holds water for longer, so droughts are longer. The air is like a bigger sponge. When the water vapor condenses out, there are bigger rains, being rung out like a sponge. Also, global warming causes the tropics to get more rain, and areas of Europe to get less rain (due to Hadley circulation related reasons). If we want to show the causal link between forests and rain, we have to filter out global warming effects on rainfall in our analysis of data. READ MORE

A zoonotic disease is a disease caused by any pathogen – bacteria, viruses, prions, fungi and parasites – capable of transmitting from vertebrate mammals to humans. Outbreaks of zoonotic diseases such as ebola, foot-and-mouth, psittacosis, or tuberculosis are often associated with severe human illness and death, as well as heavy livestock losses. Any farming and commercial use of animals is associated with an increased risk of zoonotic transmission, which is why biosecurity is so stringently regulated in most countries. READ MORE

The world’s largest wildlife crossing is finally standing. And its beauty lies in the design. The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing over the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills, CA, is one of the world’s largest wildlife crossings, designed to create a safe path for animals and restore habitat connectivity.

The ongoing strong El Niño event, which is forecast to reach peak intensity in late 2023 and dissipate by mid-2024, is expected to drive below-average rainfall across much of Southern Africa (Figure 1). The rainfall deficits will likely result in below-average 2024 harvests, including in surplus-producing South Africa and Zambia.

WHEAT (2023/24 Season) Supply: The total supply of wheat is projected at 4 489 737 tons for the 2023/24 marketing season. . .

Reduced fruit size, climate conditions affecting colour development and increased demand from the fruit-juicing industry, bolstered by good prices, caused lower-than-expected volumes of South African grapefruit being packed for export markets.

China is by far South Africa’s biggest supplier of finished goods – with the country importing $22 billion worth of Chinese goods in 2023. Although slightly down from the $24bn Chinese imports in 2022, it nearly eclipses the next three major suppliers of imports combined – Germany ($10bn), India ($8bn) and the USA ($7bn), according to UN Comtrade figures.
