South Africa’s agriculture and agribusiness sectors have a broader responsibility for food security beyond our borders. Southern Africa leans heavily on South Africa for food supplies. This is clear from the observation of South Africa’s agricultural exports. The country exported about $13.2bn of agricultural and processed food products in 2023. Nearly 40% of these exports were for Africa.Notably, roughly 90c in every dollar of South Africa’s agricultural exports to the continent is from Southern Africa. Grains, fruits, vegetables and selected beverages are typically high on South Africa’s list of agriculture and food exports to Southern Africa. Not all countries rely equally on South Africa’s agriculture and food industry. There are seven dominant countries — Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini and Zambia — which accounted for 81% of South Africa’s agricultural exports to the continent in 2023. In fact, over the past five years, these countries have accounted, on average, for 80% of South Africa’s agricultural exports to the continent a year.

“The Western Cape government’s growth for jobs strategy sets out our ambitious plan to grow the Western Cape economy by 5% annually by 2035. We aim to triple the value of the province’s exports of goods and services (inclusive of tourism) by 2035 to R450bn. “To achieve this, we need an efficient port. Productivity at the port of Cape Town must significantly improve in the lead-up to the upcoming fruit export season if we are to achieve this goal,” Meyer said in a statement.  He said he was told by Two-a-Day (TAD) fruit company’s MD Attie van Zyl that the estimated total cost of inefficiencies at the port to the provincial apple and pear industry was R999m annually. “Our apple and pear growers are directly impacted. The total estimated cost of a dysfunctional port per hectare for our farmers is R26,000 per hectare,” Van Zyl told Meyer. He told Business Day that that was the cost for 2024. Any recent improvement in the port’s performance would not have affected this figure as 90% of exports had already taken place, he said.

EXTRA

After a challenging 2023-24 summer crop season, which saw South Africa's grains and oilseeds production falling by 24% year-on-year to 15,39 million tonnes, the recovery period may be in sight. The data released by the Crop Estimates Committee this afternoon shows that South African farmers intend to plant 4,47 million hectares of summer grains and oilseeds in the 2024-25 season. This is up mildly by 1% from the previous season. The planting intentions for white maize are at 1,58 million hectares (up 1% y/y), and yellow maize is at 1,06 million hectares (down 2% y/y). The overall maize planting intentions are at 2,64 million hectares (up 0,2% y/y), which aligns with the five-year average area. The planting intentions for soybeans are at 1,2 million hectares  (up by 0,2%), the largest area on record. The sunflower seed planting intention is 540k hectares (up 2,1% y/y), slightly below the average planting of 554k hectares. The planting intentions for groundnuts are 40k hectares (down 2,9% y/y), sorghum at 54k hectares (up 28% y/y), and dry beans at 45k hectares (up 14% y/y).

This report outlines strategies to address water scarcity, improve access to clean water, and ensure sustainable management of this vital resource. Over two billion people live in countries where water supply is inadequate. Half of the world's population could be living in areas facing water scarcity by as early as 2025. Some 700 million people could be displaced by intense water scarcity by 2030.Agriculture uses 70% of the world's accessible freshwater, but some 60% of this is wasted due to leaky irrigation systems, inefficient application methods as well as the cultivation of crops that are too thirsty for the environment in which they are grown. But people need to eat good food READ MORE

In 2022, six of South Africa's nine provinces reported foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks. This was the first time in the country's history that the disease had spread this wide. The challenging place the country found itself in prompted the government and industry stakeholders to increase their focus on strengthening farm biosecurity controls and surveillance. Other interventions that are still underway include efforts to improve South Africa's veterinary and related support services (mainly the laboratories) that deal with vaccine production needs. Strawberries attract new farmers every year: it seems an easy, high-value crop with a quick growth cycle that doesn't require the amounts of capital inputs of other fruit types.
