NEWS- NUUS

Minder koring is vanjaar geplant en opbrengste in sommige gebiede was laer as verwag.

Ratings agency S&P Global has put cash-strapped Transnet on CreditWatch, putting the entity at greater risk of a credit downgrade — just months after the Treasury said it would not grant any further bailouts to state-owned entities (SOEs), including the freight and rail group. S&P in its latest review on Transnet said while it expected the entity’s operational performance to improve, this would not be completed by robust growth in cash flow — with the group’s capital expenditure requirements and debt servicing costs remaining elevated, and in its view “leaving limited room for operational underperformance”. S&P said it expected the government, as Transnet’s shareholder, to grant it further financial support to transform its capital structure, fund capital expenditure and meet upcoming debt maturities. This is as S&P expected Transnet’s debt pile to hit the R150bn mark by the end of next year.

As AI technology becomes part of our daily lives, transforming how we live, work, and play, concerns about its impact on our jobs are growing across all industries. With AI continuing to scale up within agriculture, this concern is also gaining more attention in the agricultural community as well. Questions such as “What is the impact of artificial intelligence on jobs within the sector?” and “Will AI take jobs from people in agriculture?” are becoming increasingly common. While these concerns are normal, especially given the rapid advancements in technology, it’s crucial to look beyond the threat narrative.Rather than perceiving AI solely as a threat, it’s important to examine three perspectives that highlight the benefits and AI’s potential to empower agronomists and improve agricultural practices. One of the most pressing challenges in modern agriculture is the persistent labor shortage. Many farms struggle to find enough workers, especially during peak seasons when labor-intensive crops require additional help. This trend is unlikely to reverse anytime soon: recent study from International Fresh Produce Association suggest that a 10% drop in labor availability can lead to as much as a 4.2% reduction in fruit and vegetable output, while a 21% shortage could result in a 9% production drop and $5 billion in revenue losses annually solely in the U.S.

For example, in southern Africa, within the Southern African Customs Union, the South African rand plays a relatively important role in cross-border trade and finance. Just as in south-east Asia the currencies of Singapore and Thailand compete to be the dominant currency in the sub-region. China – the world’s biggest exporter and producer of industrialised goods – is also signing bilateral currency swap agreements with countries. The goal is greater use of the renminbi in the world. READ MORE

South African industrial gas users directly employ ±70,000 people and contribute between R300 billion and R500 billion annually to the South African economy. A cessation in the gas supply will result in multiple plant closures and a significant reduction in manufacturing output across KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga.” READ MORE

The mid-summer drought negatively affected field crops, with livestock also hampered by the animal disease. Fortunately, the horticultural sub-sector has had a fairly more positive year with decent harvests in various fruits. Several high-frequency data release these past few quarters have mirrored this environment of mixed fortunes. But the trade data for the third quarter of the year paints an even more upbeat story of recovery in the sector's export performance. READ MORE

On Tuesday, Statistics SA reported that the economy shrank by 0.3% from the second to the third quarter, wrongfooting economists and the SA Reserve Bank alike. To blame was the agricultural sector, which contracted by almost 29% in a single quarter. Excluding this sector, the economy would have grown by 0.4% - more in line with what economists and the central bank were expecting. Questions are now being asked about the quality of the agricultural data used in the GDP calculations."We don’t agree with the data. The numbers do not make sense," says Johann Kotzé, CEO of Agri SA. He represents the country’s biggest agricultural organisation.While a contraction was expected due to the local drought, Kotzé says the scale of the fall is wildly out of sync with the sector’s actual experience.

South African-born Elon Musk during the most recent US presidential election. Musk threw his full support behind Donald Trump. Sources like CNN reported that he donated $119 million (more than R2.1 billion) to Trump's campaign, while Fortune suggested the figure was at least $132 million (nearly R2.4 billion).

On November 25, 2024, the Pretoria office of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) published a report on South Africa's maize market. It highlighted the difficulty caused by the recent mid-summer drought, which led to a 23% decline in maize production to 12,72 million tonnes. South Africa was not alone in this experience;

Saai (Southern Africa Agricultural Initiative) is proud to announce the continuation of its partnership with Farmers Lovers, a non-profit student organisation at the University of the Free State, dedicated to agricultural education, awareness, and sustainability.
